Thinking about a future in game development...just not sure where to start? (read through for the kicker)
Come and learn about the ins and outs of the Game Industry with Artist and Designer Ben Ruiz ( http://benruiz.net/ ). He'll explain the various job positions, disciplines, company types, business models, and do an overview of the various pieces of software used by industry professionals. He'll also talk about the suite of game making software currently available, and how to get started on making your own game!
All participants will be given a Game Dev Roadmap, your starter-kit for navigating the ever-changing world of games and game development. This is Ruiz's personal compilation of tools, resources and useful links that will help turn your game-dev interest/hobby into a career.
Ben's career speaks for itself, as Art Director of Flashbang Studios he oversaw the artistic direction of such awesomeness as Off-Road Velociraptor Safari, Minitaur China Shop, Paper Moon, and many more. He has been teaching at ASU's Camp Game for the last 3 years, and regularly represents the game industry at Career Days at high schools throughout the Valley. He's a technical blogger who's published on Gamasutra, and he's taught Production Design at Collins College. Ben is currently working on Aztez (http://www.aztez.com) which will blow your mind and make you want to listen to his advice!
This workshop will end with a Q&A session where attendees can ask anything and everything about the biz.
And here's the kicker...Like any field, success in games is also aided by "who you know". Ruiz is basically offering himself as a personal contact for any participant who wants to follow up and needs advice. "I'm totally available"...his words, not mine. :)
