WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT, THEN?
Have you ever thought about facilitating a game at a Games to Gather "Ready, Set, Game" or Freeform event but you don't know where to start?
Is the idea of being in charge of the fun for a whole group of people terrifying?
Have you facilitated a few games before, and now you're ready to level up your skills?
We're here to help! Being a facilitator / storyteller / narrator/ gamemaster is one of the most exciting parts of play in storytelling games that many players -- even players who have been active in the hobby for years -- never experience! It can be hard work, but that hard works often reaps the biggest personal rewards.
At our new monthly Facilitator Skill Share event, we want to answer your questions about facilitating games and share our collective know-how and wisdom. Likewise, facilitating games is a lifelong learning experience, and veteran facilitators will have an opportunity to sharpen their skills and workshop ideas with players new and old.
Each month, we'll pick one or two topics of focus and hold a short panel discussion and Q&A. Then we'll put theory immediately into practice by workshopping these ideas with short "real-life" play scenarios, offering constructive notes and tips & tricks that will build up every attendee into a lean, mean facilitating machine.
At the end of each session, if you're ready to take the plunge to facilitate a game, we'll give everyone an opportunity to work one-on-one with a mentor to prepare for an upcoming Games to Gather event!
THIS MONTH'S TOPIC: Perfect Pitch and Memorable Characters.
"Nobody likes to hear it, because it's dull, but the reason you win or lose is darn near always the same - pitching." -- Earl Weaver Each RSG session begins with our facilitators giving a pitch of their game and letting the potential players know what to expect. It's easy to think that even if a pitch is so-so, as long as you get players, it's all ok. But a great pitch can do so much more than just make your game sound interesting. A great pitch can focus and energize players before you even sit down. A great pitch can also level-set expectations and put all your players in the perfect mindset for your game, be it a sad quiet tragedy or a screwball action comedy.
In this session, we're going to give handouts and talk about what makes for a perfect pitch. Then we're going to workshop pitches by giving everyone in the room a chance to review a mini-RPG and come up with their best pitch possible!
If time allows, we'll transition to a second topic: creating memorable characters at the table. Our seasoned GMs and players will talk about some of their tips and tricks of making their characters more than just a pile of stats on the page, and how to wow your fellow players at the table with characters they'll remember for weeks to come.
