Garden Pool Haiti Volunteer Project and GP Certification - Sat 2/22 - Sat 3/1

  • Feb 22, 2014 · 7:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

We are believers that improving methods of growing food can improve entire communities. Some communities can use extra help.

Garden Pool is teaming up with Naturopaths Without Borders to build a Garden Pool at a clinic in Haiti and we need your help. Help us build a Garden Pool in Haiti for a medical clinic and to strengthen the local community.

We feel that bringing a Garden Pool to Haiti will not only provide fresh electricity, food and medicinal herbs year round for the sick, but it will also teach others how to replicate the GP system and help spread the knowledge to many areas.  We will also be bringing new GP water sterilization technology to Haiti.

  • Saturday Feb. 22nd 2014 - Fly from Home To Miami, Florida. Fly from Miami to Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. Travel to the medical clinic and get settled-in.
  • Sunday Feb. 23rd 2014 - GP BUILD
  • Monday Feb. 24th 2014 - GP BUILD
  • Tuesday Feb. 25th 2014 - GP BUILD
  • Wednesday Feb. 26th 2014 - GP BUILD
  • Thursday Feb. 27th 2014 - GP BUILD & Certification
  • Friday Feb. 28th 2014 - Haitian Beach and Cocoa Plantation visit.
  • Saturday March 1st 2014 - Return home via Haiti to Miami and Miami to Home.

Garden Pool will be teaching the GP Certification course in Creole and English to the folks in Haiti this September 2013.  We are also offering the course to folks from the US who would like to help us in Haiti and learn firsthand.  For a suggested donation of $2,000 you will join us in Haiti, air travel, food, transportation and dorm lodging included!  You must have your US Passport.  If you have already taken the Garden Pool Certification course, we also invite you to join at a discounted donation amount.  For more information about the GP Certification course in Haiti, please contact us or call GP at[masked]-5821.  We appreciate the support!

More...GP Haiti is unlike any other GP. The rooftop greenhouse receives full sun on a property covered with mature trees (mango, jack fruit, avocado, papaya, moringa, acerola cherry). The 10x10 pond is also located in the sun so pond plant & algae growth are encouraged, creating a food source for the fish. A 2 part enclosure was built to house a milk goat & layer chickens, supplying fresh milk & eggs daily. The climate allows them to grow vegetables/herbs year round & the warm water allows tilapia to thrive. Several Haitian attendees were agronomist students, an another student an agronomist from a nearby large non-profit. Excess tilapia fry/fingerlings/pond plants ensures a supply of startup components to share. Class included methods for low to no technology. Interest in and fascination with the system was overwhelming. My very sincere thanks to Dennis and Danielle for their vision & follow through on this amazing project!!!!! I'm honored to have been a participant!

GP Haiti was an amazing adventure, a truly rewarding experience. The Haitian volunteers were enthusiastic, both to learn the GP ecosystem and to understand every detail to ensure their success growing food in water and raising healthy tilapia fish. Many revisited the site after the build and class days were over. Using local materials was a challenge, but it made the build uniquely satisfying. Availability of materials fluctuates, short supply forces the prices to become absurd, so flexibility and innovation are key. The most memorable thing I can share is the pride of the Haitian people and their deep love for Haiti. They are humble and have an innate drive to regularly express their heartfelt gratitude for being given the opportunity to learn. Haitian humor and smiles are contagious, a hard job quickly becomes a fun endeavor. I am so thankful to Garden Pool for taking on this admirable project and offering GP training in Creole. The build and training was a huge success!
