I started Gay Dads Chicago on 03 July 2010 as soon as I realized that there was no such support group on the internet. I mistakenly set it up so that any and all correspondence went to the website and not to my personal email address. I hadn't checked it since its inception, and a friend googled "Gay Dads" and exclaimed, "Here's a site, and it has 98 hits". I replied, "That's my site, and it has how many hits?!". I already had 1 member , and I was up until 1:00am sending emails to as many potential members as the website would allow (they limit the number that I can send in a 24-hour period). We were so very excited!
The next morning I awoke to find that we had 3 members, and I began to cry immediately. The kind woman at the next computer handed me napkins to dry my tears, and I explained to her that these were joyful tears. I called my friend, and, when he arrived, the floodgates opened. I sobbed almost uncontrollably for 15 minutes. You see, I had been (unfairly) fired from my research job 5 weeks ago, had been in small claims court (assault) and family court (child support and visitation) the day before and was fighting to save my house and avoid bankruptcy.
We now have 25 members and had our first holiday party Saturday.
Our priorities: 1) support, 2) friendship, 3) socializing and 4) dating.
I'll be in Toronto in January 2011 and would like to begin a group there.
Peace,
Guy
