There is a huge geek community in the lower mainland, and many of us are pretty crafty. So, I thought it might be fun to have a group where we could get together to make and compare our fannish fiber creations, share patterns, tricks and tips.
We're totally non-denominational - we love all sci-fi, from Star Wars to Star Trek to Stargate. Hell! We love anything with the word "star" in it, not to mention the words "Joss Whedon". Anything involving time travel is generally considered to ROCK. Nobody here is going to try to convince you that one show is the best. They are all fantastic!
And, there are so many things we can do ...
We can knit - R2D2 hats, Jayne Hats, Doctor Who and Hogwart's scarves. Has anyone got a pattern for the red shawl that Saffron wore in Our Mrs. Reynolds? Kim's Dalek was a popular item in the silent auction at Can't Stop the Serenity 2010.
I have a hankering to crochet a "Holy Hand Grenade". I've seen patterns for a very cunning crochet Kaylee parasol pot holder and I'd love to find out how to make an Adipose Baby from Doctor Who.
Amber's cross-stitch Firefly character creations were a huge hit at CSTS 2010.
I know many of us like to work on costumes. Val made a great Princess Leia wig from yarn for last year's Canada Day Parade.
We've had one stamping/papercraft session so far and I'm keen to schedule more.
Steampunk, anyone?! We've tried our hands at making Steampunk Goggles, and it's just the tip of the iceberg.
And there are some totally awesome props out there. The Stargate group wowed David Hewlett with their own Stargate at the July 4th parade in Tsawassen in 2009 ("Have Stargate, Will Travel). Yves made a BSG Viper out of cardboard that could almost fly.
We could even try our hand at beading and glass etching! The possibilities are endless.
I have a screen printing machine, so let's design some creative t-shirts and have a session.
If you have a skill that you'd like to share with the group, let me know and we'll look at the calendar and figure out when to hold it. Personally, I'd like to learn how pick a lock, so if anyone knows ... Come on! Thats a useful skill!! What if you got locked out of your place??
And, you don't have to already know how to "__(fill in the blank)___" to join. This is where you can come to get started on your crafty projects. There'll be folk here who can help get you started, who won't wonder why you want to make a head slug head band.
So, join the fun and we'll get creative!
