The National Zoo Two Scavenger Hunt!

The National Zoo Two!

The Zoo Two? It's true! It's fun for you and your little kids too!

Yes indeed, it's Scavenger Hunt time! Are you ready to put your zoological skills to the test? Are you in tune with your species? Your genus? How about your family, order, class, and phylum? Do you like cute pandas, smelly monkeys, and turtles? Well, if you answered yes to any of those, then this is the hunt for you!

The format remains the same. Attendees will be broken up into multiple teams who will then have two hours to solve as many riddles, clues, and quirky challenges as possible. Each answer will need to have a cellphone photograph that includes at least one team member sent via text to the hunt master for approval. At the end of the two hours, the team with the most correct answers wins.

The hunt will take place within the boundaries of the National Zoo and will require a bit of walking. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothing.

P.S - We will grab food and drinks afterwards for some fun socializing!

--- MEETUP INFORMATION ---

LOCATION: We will meet just inside of the zoo at the Connecticut Avenue entrance (the main entrance) of the zoo. Look for either a sign or a large group of people.

TRAVEL: I highly recommend taking the Metro. You can walk to the zoo from either the Cleveland Park or the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan stops on the Red Line. If you wish to drive, you can find parking in the neighborhoods near the zoo, but be sure to read the parking signs to avoid being towed. Note, parking at the zoo is expensive.

CONTACT: My phone number is (301) 758-1144. Please do not hesitate to call/text me with any questions or concerns.

REMINDER: The Zoo is free. Yay!

Terrific. Brilliant clues: some may have been a bit too intricate, but that is inevitable. In particular, Bladen did a spectacular job of mixing up different kinds of clues: some pop culture, some word play, some scientific, some puns, some just weird. Something for everyone -- and all of this in the Zoo!

Clues were way, way too hard. I really can't understand how some groups got over 30 answers. Maybe they used google? My group got something like 5 answers. And we were trying very hard to figure out the clues. We really couldn't understand any of them, and the ones we did get were mostly due to luck.

I doubt anyone got more than 30 answers -- there were a lot of 2 point questions. What we did was try to figure out a lot of the clues before going to any of the exhibits, so that we had an idea of what we were looking for. Our problem was that the travel time between places was quite high, especially given how hot it was, so we knew the approximate answers to many things we didn't have time to get to.

It's difficult to gauge a riddles difficulty. A riddle that is difficult for one person is easy for another and visa versa. The one thing I've learned from doing this a lot is that solving riddles requires a certain type of thinking and a bit of practice. Some of the lawyers I work with couldn't solve some of the riddles that several teams got very quickly. But, once you get in the right mindset (ex: look for puns, alternate meanings, homonyms etc.) they become easier to solve. Of course, the challenge for me is providing enough information in the riddle to make it solvable but not too much to make it obvious. It's a tough target to hit 45 times.

    Greetings Scavenger Hunters!

Tomorrow is the Zoo Scavenger Hunt and the weather forecast looks beautiful! Now, it wouldn't be a true Meetup without Metro track work, so if you're taking the Red Line please note that the following stations are closed: Brookland, Fort Totten (Red Line only), Takoma, and Silver Spring. Add 30 minutes to your trip for shuttle service if you're going through any of these stations. Second, please do your best to arrive on time. I will begin team assembly promptly at 2 pm and I intend on starting the hunt by 2:30 pm. If you are running late, please text me and let me know.

Last but not least, you do not need a team prior to the event. Many people will be showing up solo and almost everybody ends up in a random team. It's a great way to meet new people!

With all that in mind, I look forward to meeting everybody tomorrow. Bring a pen. Bring a charged cell-phone. But most importantly, bring your brain!

    Happy Hunting!

    - Bladen
