What does having child members do for the liability insurance premium?

There isn't a "budget" documentation... yet, but the breakdown of our assumptions looks like this, based on the quoted rent for the facility:
Per month:
- Rent (includes building insurance and CAM): $1,061
- Liability Insurance: $120 (based on Freesides' ballpark figures)
- Utilities: $400 (probably a low-ball figure here)

That means our minimum operating budget is ~$1600/mo.
We decided on a $40/month price point after polling the early members and hammering out a figure. Hence: 40 members

Looking at these numbers again, we're probably safer at $50 a month. It's still very reasonable for a makerspace. For comparison, Freeside is $80, though they have over twice the square-footage of our current projected space.

Once idea to help expand the membership is to have family/junior members (based on mailing address). Add a spouse or kid (there's at least one here who's kid is interested!) for ~$20 a month.

Ah, I see the meetup list gets the current traffic. I'll cross-post as well.

There are 2 or three guys at work who I'm fairly certain will be interested in a makerspace as well. I'll stir them up.

$40 a month huh? that seems pretty reasonable. Is there a financial breakdown/plan somewhere? I'm curious what the assumptions are.  Is rent really that cheap these days?

(Crossposting this to the Meetup List)

Early posting were just that... early.

There's a 23x27-foot warehouse/shop space to fill with gear (I'm of course operating under the assumption that the space we end up with is the one we crawled back in the early part of the summer... dangerous, I know...)

As far as member count goes, we don't have anything concrete yet, but I'd say at least ten to twenty pledgies. We're currently staring a $40/month membership rate down with an $80 minimum pledge (that includes the first month of operation's membership) to be considered a charter member.

Hi all, I've recently discovered this project's existence and am _very_ excited.

I dipped my toes in at Freeside a while ago, but the distance from way up here in the north part of town (and having a family etc.) made it just impractical. Hopefully this will be the answer!

I'll find a place to help soon enough, but I should also share what equipment I plan on loaning/donating to the space:

  * a desktop metal lathe
  * a desktop mill, CNC converted
  * a drillpress
  * a workbench
  * a Prusa-style RepRap
  * a old 1U server
  * shelves and other stuffs
Basically, I'd like to give my personal maker-lab to the space. I think it'll get more use that way. (plus I'm hoping the space will get a laser-cutter... I really want access to a laser cutter...)

I'll be at the Maker Faire and should also be at the next meeting at the pizza joint as well. We can talk about what more I can do to help then.

BTW, how are we looking as far as member-count these days?

PS. I read in some of the early postings here some stuff that made it sound like metal working wouldn't be welcome. :( is that still the sentiment? I've also got experience welding and blacksmithing and am hoping to get into some casting as well.
