February Meetup: Slum Mapping

Details

In February, the meetup will focus on slum mapping, with presenters talking about successful projects, approaches, and tools they've used to map places that traditionally are un-mappable due to lack of resources, government pressure, and other reasons.

We'll hear five minute lightning talks on the following:

Mikel Maron (https://twitter.com/#!/mikel) will talk about his work with GroundTruth (http://groundtruthinitiative.org/) mapping Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, East Jerusalem, and Cite Soleil. Brian English from CHF International will talk about his work mapping slums in India (http://www.nytimes.com/cwire/2011/05/16/16climatewire-foundations-try-to-legitimize-indias-invisib-79578.html?pagewanted=all) and Ghana (http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=poverty-map-atlas-india-ghana). Josh Goldstein (https://twitter.com/#!/african_minute) from the World Bank will talk about his work mapping Dar es Salam. Christoph Koettl (http://twitter.com/ckoettl) from Amnesty International will discuss his work mapping slums in Chad. We'll meet at the upstairs bar at Stetson's at the intersection of 16 + U Streets NW at 7:00 pm. Presentations will start at 7:30 pm, after a round of introductions. Come ready to learn more about slum mapping, ask questions to our presenters on how it can be done, and meet lots of people interested in maps, GIS, and geography.

We meet once a month on the first Wednesday of the month. Mark your calendars for future meetups! Join this group and follow us on twitter (https://twitter.com/#!/geonerdsdc) for updates.
