January GeoDC: Satellites

Details

Note: We'll meet one week later than usual to give folks a chance to get back into the swing of things post-holidays.

GeoDC will kick off the New Year on Wednesday, January 9 by talking about satellite imagery - what's available, how you can access it, why that matters, and how you can use it. We have three lightning talks on the lineup:

Chris Herwig (https://twitter.com/hrwgc) will talk about sourcing public data imagery available from sources like USDA, USGS, and state geospatial agencies to make MapBox Satellite (http://mapbox.com/blog/mapbox-satellite/), and the trouble he ran into with these geoportals and getting open data out of them. Preview here (http://mapbox.com/blog/trouble-with-geoportals). Mark Dumas (https://twitter.com/MarkEDumas) from GeoEye (http://www.geoeye.com/CorpSite/) will provide an overview of their satellites and information technology highlighting how imagery and analytics can be used to elevate insight for decision makers. Greg Lavonas (https://twitter.com/glavonas) from DigitalGlobe (http://www.digitalglobe.com/) will talk about their satellite constellation and how it can be used to monitor significant world events. Greg will highlight several events from the past year and show what images DigitalGlobe collected and how they've been used. If you're using satellite imagery in an interesting way and want to give a five minute lightning talk, message us here or hit us up on Twitter at @Geo_DC (http://twitter.com/geo_dc).

GeoDC meets once a month (usually) on the first Wednesday of the month to socialize, network, and hear about what people are doing with maps, geodata, geography, and location. We meet at Stetson's (http://stetsons-dc.com/index.php), right off of 16th and U streets NW. It's a bar, and therefore 21 and over. If you're underage and want to attend, message us and we'll do our best to get you in. If you want food, we recommend the wings.

For updates, join this group and follow us on Twitter at @Geo_DC (http://twitter.com/geo_dc).
