December Meetup: Nonprofit Mapping Showcase

Huge thanks to the 65+ of you who made it to last month's Mapping in the Government meetup. The turnout was great and the event was a big success. It's time to start thinking about December now, so clear your calendars for December 7th at 7pm. We'll be meeting upstairs at Stetson's.

I hope you're all ready to hear about some of the most interesting things that nonprofits in DC are doing with maps-- I'm pleased to announce our December lineup of speakers:

  • Shiv Ramachandran from InterAction will present on NGO Aid Map, an online platform aimed at increasing transparency, fostering partnerships, and facilitating coordination among NGOs working on the ground on issues like food security, famine in the Horn of Africa, and post earthquake aid in Haiti.
  • Gina Rumbolo from Population Action International will present on their work mapping population and climate change hotspots.
  • Mark Bergel from the local nonprofit A Wider Circle, which collects furniture and housewares donations and distributes them to families who need them, will talk about how theymapped their operations to see where donations were coming from, where they were going, and what neighborhoods they were missing.

Don't forget to RSVP!

*We're still looking for a few more speakers (for 5 minute lightning talks), so if you are interested in talking to us about how your nonprofit is using maps, let us know!*

As ever, a quick reminder that the GeoNerd Google Group is a great place to post events, questions, and other related discussions. This is where we try to post the presenters' slides after our meetups as well as pictures and other fun stuff. Check it out and set the email frequency to whatever strikes your fancy.

Also, if you're a twitter-type, there's a @GeoNerdsDC account that is still getting off the ground. Follow for 140 character geo goodness.

See you all on the 7th!
