Geo Seattle -
OpenStreetMap Seattle is beginning to plan a large-scale import of Seattle-related data into OSM. Imports can be tricky and we're doing our best to put together a methodical plan to enter the data (see: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Seattle_Import), but the more people we have, and the more local knowledge we have, the faster the process will work, and hopefully, the better the quality will be. We're going to plan, prep, and train over the next few weeks and start in earnest late in December or in January. The primary goal is to make sure we have the best addressing information possible in OSM. A secondary goal is to make sure the OSM map of Seattle (and environs) is among the best in the world.
If you're interested, please sign up for OSM (www.openstreetmap.org), check out the editing tools (JOSM, Potlatch, etc.), and get in touch with Cliff Snow or Jeff Meyer (both Geo Seattle members) or just sign up on the OSM Wiki: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Seattle_Import/Work_Table.
Important note: we want to make sure this import is as methodical and safe as we can be, so as not to mess up existing data and to not make our lives more difficult down the road. So, we'll be holding off on opening the gates for a bit. Please do not start importing mass amounts of data without checking first! : )
Prior to our starting the import, we'll have a general OSM tools & import specifics training course at a time and place tbd.
Stay tuned - I'm hoping this is something members of Geo Seattle will find interesting!
