GetHiking! on new trail in the Uwharries

Details
In the 1970s, the Uwharrie National Recreation Trail ran about 40 miles through the Uwharrie National Forest west of Asheboro. Because of land ownership issues, that total shrunk by about half. Recent efforts, though, have pushed to get the trail restored to its former length. That effort has resulted in another 8 miles of trail punching north, from the Juming-Off Rock trailhead off Flint Hill Road to Pisgah Covered Bridge Road.
We're fortunate to have Don Childrey, who probably knows more about trail in the Uwharries than anyone, lead this hike. In 1998, Childrey published the "Uwharrie Lakes Region Trail Guide," (http://donchildrey.com/books/uwharrie-lakes-region-trail-guide-second-edition/) covering more than 150 miles of trail in the region. This fall, Childrey published the second edition of his book, which includes 215 miles of trail — including the eight miles he will lead us on. Two of the many highlights on this route: passage over Little Long Mountain (pictured), which offers one of the few mountaintop views in the region, and over King Mountain, one of the few Uwharrie peaks to top 1,000 feet.
A great opportunity to hike new trail and to hike it with someone who can answer just about any question you may have on the trail.
