Intro to HTML & CSS

Want to learn how to build your own website? Already have your own Tumblr/Wordpress/etc site, but want to have more control over it? Interested in learning to program but want to start small? This class is for you!

We will guide you through the basics of HTML and CSS, give you some readily-applicable skills, and answer any questions you may have along the way.

The course will be taught by Laura Vecchio, a Rich Application Developer at Bose (http://www.lauravecchio.com). If you're interested in helping out as a Teaching Assistant, please let us know.

This 4-class HTML/CSS course runs for four Thursdays. The cost of the class is for all four classes.

  1. Class 1, Introduction to HTML: Apr 11, 6-8pm
  2. Class 2, Introduction to CSS: Apr 18, 6-8pm
  3. Class 3, HTML, beyond the basics: Apr 25, 6-8pm
  4. Class 4, CSS, layouts and formatting: May 2, 6-8pm

Please install the following on your computer prior to class:

  • A code editor. (We recommend Notepad++ for Windows and SublimeText or TextWrangler for Mac.)
  • A modern browser. (We recommend Google Chrome (best) or Mozilla Firefox with the Firebug plugin.)

A huge thanks to our sponsor Custom Made for supporting us with their awesomeness! Check them out to connect with woodworkers, jewelers, metalworkers & more who can help make your custom project idea a reality.

While I've still a lot to learn, after taking the class I've been able to go in and alter HTML for my company's WordPress blog. Just minor cosmetic changes for now but their default coding functions have been so restrictive & wonky it's great to finally make it look more like I want it to. Also am applying these new skills a bit to my personal Blogger site (see profile for link!).

    Hi ladies,

I've placed all of my files up on my server for you to download. Go to this URL and the zip file should auto-download for you: http://lauravecchio.com/GDI/Intro-HTML-CSS.zip

Hope you all enjoyed Class 3 tonight. Since next week is the last class of the series, if there is anything you would like me to spend more time on, don't hesitate to ask.

As a reminder, following next week's class we will be heading to Abigail's for a drink together to celebrate all our hard work! http://abigailsrestaurant.net/. Hope you all can make it. See you next week,

    Laura

When we sign up for this first class, do we pay $90 up front with the assumption that we will be attending all 4 classes?

    April 7, 2013

    • Annette A.

      Hey there,
Correct, payment is processed when you register for the class. (If there's any risk that you cannot make all 4 classes, then we strongly recommend that you wait for another class that better fits your schedule.) Hope that helps, let us know if you have any other questions. :)

When is the last day we can pay for the classes? I really want to attend but it would mean missing work for 4 Thursdays in row, have to run it by my boss before I decide to go forth with the payment.

We take students up until the day before - generally, we only try to cut it off so that we can make sure we have enough spaces/cords/materials for everyone. :)

    • Elizabeth L.

Hey Cynthia - You can pay for the class up until the day of the class. Hope you can join us! We are working on getting other classes scheduled and we will offer this one again.

Why is this so expensive? Were is the money going? Is this really a non-profit group?

    March 6, 2013

    • Elizabeth L.

Hello there! Thanks for your question! The costs of the class is $11.25 per instruction hour. The class is 8 hours of instruction over 4 nights. Half of the fees are to pay the instructor the other half is used to cover costs to coordinate and rent space for classes, host events for the group and a small portion is sent to headquarters to cover cost associated with supporting all chapters and creating new curriculum. We are absolutely a non-profit organization that puts all of our "profits" into the perpetuating our mission. We are looking into finding businesses to sponsor our class/events so costs can be lowered and scholarships can also be offered. I hope this answers your question - please email me directly if you have any more questions. We are having a free event on March 27 (check out the Social Mixer on the meetup page for details) where we will be talking more about what we do and meeting ladies who are a part of the group!

Any chance that any of these courses might end up online? I live in Dubai and won't be moving back to Boston until June . . . Thanks! So happy to have found GDI! x
