Intro to HTML/CSS

This class runs for two consecutive Saturdays on April 13th and April 20th from 10AM to 2:30PM with a half hour lunch break each day. Learn to build your own website! Learn how to better control the one you've already got! No prior web design experience necessary.

Tech Requirements:
- Your laptop.
- A modern browser with either Chrome and the "Web Developer" extension or Firefox and Firebug installed.
- A text editor. We recommend Komodo Edit (It's free and available for both Mac and PC).

You can take a sneak peak at the slides here: http://www.girldevelopit.com/materials. Look for the HTML and CSS core curriculum.

Office Squared has graciously offered their beautiful office space at 77 College Street, at the Champlain Street entrance.

* The $72 entrance fee covers BOTH days.

Thank you to Professor Sarah Pettitt for teaching us over the last 2 weekends. You were great, after class I kept hearing your voice saying "bigger?" HA! In all seriousness I learned a lot and am excited to keep learning. As for the various TA's you guys were awesome! Thank you Mo for putting this all together, I am definitely loving GDI Burlington. Go Ladies! I found this kind of floofy coding game if anyone is looking for a beginner approach to enhance the skills they learned: http://coderace.me/#

Hey Emily. Thanks for the reply. Ok so my question is; If I use a picture that is not a perfect square...When I change my background color, the image has a white box around it. So I am wondering how to use an image that is a shape and get the color to surround the whole thing.

    1 · April 15, 2013

    • Emily Spence P.

      No problem at all.

You can search for an image with a transparent background. If you use an image service it should indicate either in the description or you may see the transparent background represented in the example as as gray and white checked background.

You can see the demo here. Feel free to mess with the code you see and play with the demo. Change the background color or add a font style. Have fun! http://codepen.io/e-t...

I would definitely recommend this class for both beginners and advanced alike. It's a pity not everyone could make the sessions, and I hope that they will be able to in the future. Personally, I felt that it was a great refresher course, and I cannot wait for the second session!

I'm jumping the gun a bit but CSS specificity is important. Bookmark this for later. http://www.stuffandnonsense.co.uk/archives/css_specificity_wars.html

    Hi Maureen,
I know there are no refunds for this class, but can I not attend the class and apply my class fees towards another class? I signed up and then of course, a day later found out I'm going to have to be gone one of the weekends. Booooooooo!

Hey Maura - Just wanted to check in to see if you've found a buyer for your ticket. I'd like to ensure that whoever takes your seat is brought into the loop on class announcements this week.

      April 8, 2013

    • Maureen M.

Hey Maura - I need confirmation of the meetup name of the person who purchased your ticket so that I can send them the class information. Please forward me the link to their meetup profile. Thanks!

Something just came up and I am unable to attend these 2 days. Anyone want to take my spot?

    April 9, 2013

  • Erin O.

I would love to attend this-- But I have a full class load currently... Would be interested in seeing the summer opportunities as I will have some more time then, depending on what is scheduled and when... This really seems like a good idea to me....

It looks like i will need to be out of town the second weekend of this class and I do not want to miss it the 2nd half...so I would be willing to sell my spot to someone and sign up for this class the next time it is open. I have a bit of HTML/CSS experience (I'm currently taking an intro course and have self-taught). Would this be a good class for me or too basic?

    Thanks!

    March 26, 2013

    • Maureen M.

Hey Alaina - This class will take students from 0-60, and everyone should leave with a simple website. From the sound of it, this class might be redundant from the intro class you are already taking. We will soon be scheduling intermediate HTML/CSS and a javascript class and those might be more your speed. Thanks for your interest!
