Book Club: Ask For It - How Women Can Use the Power of Negotiation

As we pass Equal Pay Day (which was this past Tues, April 8, 2014), we want to take action. One of the reasons the pay gap exists is that women simply don't ask for or negotiate their salaries. According to the "Women Don't Ask" web site, "By not negotiating a first salary, an individual stands to lose more than $500,000 by age 60 -- and men are more than four times as likely as women to negotiate a first salary."

On June 4th, we'll get together to discuss "Ask for It: How Women Can Use the Power of Negotiation to Get What They Really Want." The book is a guide to negotiating - whether it's a raise, a promotion, a new project, chores around the house, a new purchase with your partner - basically anything that applies to your every day life. We'll talk about what we learned, strategies discussed in the book, and ask questions.

A big thanks to Jana Veliskova for leading this event and for RJ Metrics for hosting us. They'll be providing coffee for us and some light snacks. You're welcome to bring your own as well.

A note on RJ Metrics - they're a business intelligence company that works with eCommerce sites to help them make smarter decisions with their data. They're currently hiring for 10 positions including a Product Designer, Software Engineer, Staff Writer, Community Manager, Business Development and more. Check them out here.

The book group was interactive and well-organized. I learned a lot about the role of negotiation during and after the interview.

Hey everyone, we just learned you must buzz in when you enter from Chestnut St. Look for the black gates and the buzzer is on the left hand side.

I don't know why, but when I added this meetup to my calendar app it keeps saying it's at Good Karma Cafe instead of RJMetrics.

It was originally planned at Good Karma and we switched the venues because of the interest. It is def at RJMetrics.

Great book! I have a copy (I think it's here in Philly ...) if someone wants to borrow.

I went book hunting and it looks like it's back at my parent's house in KY :( sorry for the mistake, Naisha!

I haven't had time to read the book, but I've checked out several reviews. Here's a link to a blog post (I think this blogger has another post on the book as well):

    See you all tonight!

Hey all, please update your RSVP's if you're not going to make it. I have to get the full list of names to security at 12:30pm and RJMetrics needs a headcount for the snacks/drinks. Thanks!

Good news: RJMetrics will be sponsoring drinks and light snacks. An update on RSVP's: We need to close signups for this event on noon Wed the 4th so we can get a list of names to the security list. Make sure to update your RSVP before then!

Hey Everyone! I hope you've had the chance to read the book. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone next week. Depending on how many members come, we may start as a large group to get a discussion going and then split into smaller groups to get more of a conversation going. Come ready to chat!

Love the interest so far! There may be a venue switch so we can accommodate more people. If your company can host us, get in touch with Jana or myself.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
