Beyond the Basics of HTML/CSS

This class runs on Sat, Sept 6 and Sun, Sept 7 from 12:45pm to 5pm. The cost covers both days.

You took Intro to HTML/CSS, and learned a great foundation...now what? In this class, we'll be building a single-page website with all the new hotness: HTML5 for semantical structure and CSS3 for sweet visual flourishes like gradients, rounded corners, and drop shadows. The latest CSS specification provides advanced selectors, graphical enhancements, and better font support that make our sites more visually appealing without using font image replacement techniques, complex JavaScript, or graphics tools.

We'll also try out some more advanced techniques, like CSS animations and responsive design, and we'll talk about some flashy HTML5 features that do require JavaScript.

To get the most out of this class, you should have a working knowledge of basic HTML and CSS. You may have taken Intro to HTML through Girl Develop It, or maybe you have built a site for fun.

To help you gauge whether or not this class is a good fit given your current skill set, you must take this mandatory quiz. You will be asked to enter your confirmation score when you register via Meetup. A review will be provided before we start the new material and you can view the material from our class on our website (look under the "Intermediate HTML"). If you have additional questions, feel free to post them below.

Tech Requirements:
-A new laptop bought within the last 3 years. Note: a netbook or tablet is NOT a substitute!
-Google Chrome (or Firefox is ok)
-A text editor. We recommend Sublime Text 3 (It's free and available for both Mac and PC).

Unemployed or in financial distress and interested in taking this class? Apply for a scholarship.

About the teacher: Elise is an engineering director and front-end engineer at Monetate. Her specialties include HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, though she also has experience in PHP, VB, and C#. She has been a volunteer at Girl Develop It for the past year, assisting in numerous classes. She is a musician and operates what her husband refers to as the "gluten-free test kitchen" out of their home. You may have seen her fronting a rock band, presenting at the 2012 Geek Awards, or volunteering at other women-in-tech events around the city. You can connect with her on Twitter at @Not_Pele.

Want to help out at this class? We're always looking for TA's! Contact the organizer at yasmine at girldevelopit dot com.

All attendees are expected to abide by the Girl Develop It Code of Conduct.

If anyone is on the waiting list, let me know. I can't make it tomorrow so there is a spot open...

  • Ashley M.

Is there a chance to open up another spot?

    September 1, 2014

    • Elise W.

Often people's schedules will change as class gets closer. Keep an eye on the waitlist for a spot to open.

Every time I try and pay it keeps my husband as the customer. I am not opposed to him paying, but my work is sponsoring me to take this class so I want to put it on my work cc. I have to fool around with the back end payment but I am def signing up. Thanks for your patience.

I would like to sign up for this class, can you include me in any calendar updates? Can I sign up now for Sept 6?

    June 27, 2014

    • Yasmine M.

Hey Helene, I just opened up the RSVPs so you can register now if you want to be included in all updates!

My Mac is from mid 2010. Is that okay? Not quite within the last 3 years, but I'm not sure what that requirement is for... Just want to be sure I'll have the necessary equipment.

    June 14, 2014

    • Elise W.

That should be ok, Amber! We just don't want you to be focusing on wrangling elderly machines, rather than learning new material. :)

fun quiz! happy to see I qualify! sounds like a great curriculum.

Hi! I am so excited for HTML/CSS Beyond the Basics! Will there be any type of review session at the beginning of the class to go over the HTML/CSS basics class (back on April 26/27)? I took the quiz and passed, but could use a refresher - do you recommend a tutorial before coming? I just don't want to fall behind in the class.

  • Katherine S.

Wish I could go. But at $90! per person.. someone who is not employed and looking to learn new skills to get compatible I just can't do it. Wish there was a free class once in awhile. this is unattainalble.

    June 10, 2014

    • Yasmine M.

Katherine - we strive to make our courses affordable and this class breaks down to $11.25 per hour which is cheaper than a yoga class. There are free online classes where you can learn on your own: http://www.myasmine.c.... If you know the basics of HTML and pass the quiz, you can also apply for our scholarship fund as well: https://docs.google.co...

      1 · June 10, 2014

    • Katherine S.

Yoga is a waste of money while learning html is not. Sorry, I can't afford $90 at once. And I learn better in groups. I know there are plenty of free online courses but I need to be in a classroom/group setting to benefit

Will this class be offered any other days in the future?

    May 28, 2014

    • Elise W.

Or, sorry, did you mean other days of the week? I like to run it on weekends, but if there's demand for another format, we could figure something out.

      June 3, 2014

    • Yvonne

      Yes other than a Saturday.

      June 4, 2014

  • Kristi C.

I'd like to volunteer to TA this when it comes around - please let me know if you need me! :)

    • Yasmine M.

Thanks so much Kristi! Save the dates and I'll be in touch.
