Pair Programming Workshop

Have you been wanting to carve out some time to practice your HTML/CSS or JavaScript skills, but not sure what to do or where to start? Come out to PairUp Programming and practice coding with the help of a fellow GDI student at your skill level!

For 2 hours you’ll be paired up with a random person to hack on a small project designed to give you some great practice coding in HTML/CSS or Javascript.

There will be three group levels: Level 1 - HTML/CSS,  Level 2 -Basic Javascript, and Level 3 - Advanced Javascript.

We’ll have a list of project ideas available for you to pick from (you can check them out at  www.pairuptocode.com)

The agenda for the night:

6:30pm: Register and get a sticker for your level.

7:00pm: Event starts - Decide what project to work on, using our recommended list or by brainstorming ideas with your partner. Hack on your projects together for the next 2 hours.

9:00pm: Event ends.

Prerequisites:

Please bring a laptop to work on with the following installed:

- A text editor such as Sublime Text 3

- A web browser such as Google Chrome or Firefox

- Also a notebook or sketchbook may be handy for brainstorming ideas with your partner.

About the teacher:

Starting out as a Graphic Designer, Kristi Centinaro was driven to "create things people could interact with", and taught herself how to code after-hours starting in 2008 using online courses, books, and "lots and lots of Google". She now works as a Javascript Engineer for 50onRed in Philadelphia and is passionate about helping others learn how to code and 'career switch' into tech. When she's not building websites or web apps, she freelances as a Concept Artist & Illustrator.

    2 more questions.

    1) how is the wifi access in the building? just got my laptop and had not had the change to figure out to get internet access outside my home.

    2) what is the price of the parking lot across the street?

    thanks

Wifi was pretty good last time we were there (and there was a lot of people!), so it should be OK for us tonight. I'm not sure of the lot prices but they seem to average around $15-$20 for 2+ hours.

When I signed up for the course I requested to be partnered with someone for beginning javascript. I haven't had as much practice with that as I would have liked and should probably be downgraded to HTML/CSS practice. (Unless there is someone who thinks they are awesome at teaching novice level javascript!) Thanks, see you all tomorrow!

No worries! We have a lot of folks who will be at the HTML/CSS level, so you can choose either level 1 or 2, whichever makes you comfortable. Have a look at the exercises at http://www.pairuptoco... to help you decide. :)

Keep them coming. I swear I'll be free to join you folks soon. This would be PERFECT for me, but alas, family outing.

I downloaded the Sublime 3 and extract the file, is it an application that I can run, or use the text editor application file that is in the file?

Just wondering how it can be used since it is my first time using it

      June 22

    • Kristi C.

I know there is a multi-day (8 hour total) class coming in July for JavaScript! I won't be teaching but I'll very likely be one of the TA's! :)

  • Deborah S.

Is this class suitable for beginners?

    June 20

    • Kristi C.

Hi Deborah, You should be familiar and have worked with at least HTML and CSS, or have taken courses like GDI's Intro to HTML/CSS or Beyond the Basics. There will not be any instruction on what these languages are all about, though there will be people to help you if you have questions! This is a workshop intended to help you practice your HTML/CSS/Javascript skills.
