Build Your Own Website: Intro to HTML/CSS

This class is a 4-day series running on Tues/Thurs on August 19, 21, 26, and the 28th from 6:45pm to 9:00pm each day. The cost covers all 4 nights.

Want to learn how to build your own website? Already have your own site and want to have more control over it? Interested in learning to program but want to start small? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, this course is for you!

This beginner course will guide you through the basics of HTML and CSS to assist you along the way as you develop your own website.

Unemployed or in financial distress and interested in taking this class? Apply for a scholarship.

About the teacher:

Elise is an engineering director and front-end engineer at Monetate. Her specialties include HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, though she also has experience in PHP, VB, and C#. She has been a volunteer at Girl Develop It for the past year, assisting in numerous classes. She is a musician and operates what her husband refers to as the "gluten-free test kitchen" out of their home. You may have seen her fronting a rock band, presenting at the 2012 Geek Awards, or volunteering at other women-in-tech events around the city. You can connect with her on Twitter at @Not_Pele.

Tech Requirements:

Your laptop. Note: A netbook or tablet is NOT a substitute.

A modern browser with either Chrome and the "Web Developer" extension or Firefox and Firebug installed.

A text editor. We recommend Sublime Text 3 (It's free and available for both Mac and PC).

Bummer! This is the class I've been psyched for, but I can't come on the 21st. Will look for it again in the fall!

I hope you run this again in the fall!

Awesome intro class. The perfect start and I can't wait to continue with the second workshop. Thanks to Elise and all the TAs.

I may not be able to make 8/ this an issue?

    August 18, 2014

    • Elise W.

      Hi, Stephanie.
It's fine with me, if you'd like to cover the slides for Thursday on your own and rejoin us next Tuesday, but it could be a challenge if you prefer to learn in the classroom setting and depending on your prior experience. I am certainly available by email to answer questions outside of class hours, as well.
It's entirely up to you, as to whether you'd prefer to wait for another time when you could attend all classes in sequence.

I have an Acer One notebook. Is that sufficient for this class? Is it ok as long as I can download the required browser and text editor?

    August 13, 2014

    • Elise W.

Should be fine, as long as you're able to work fairly comfortably and quickly in those two applications, yep!

Perhaps a silly question, but is it $90/class or for all four classes?

    August 12, 2014

    • Elise W.

The price is for the full series!

Sublime Text 3 is now out and it is asking for $70 for the licensing fee. Is it still recommended at the upgrade? Also, it isn't exactly free. Just curious, thanks!

    August 1, 2014

    • Yasmine M.

Good question! You can register it for $70 or keep it unregistered for free - you'll just get pop-ups prompting you to upgrade you from time to time you can close out of. If you'll be making sites regularly, we highly recommend upgrading. Wait to decide after the class when you've used it for a bit.
