HTML5/CSS3

This HTML5/CSS3 course runs for two days on Saturday, February 9th and Sunday, February 10th from 10:30am to 3:30pm. There will be a 45 minute lunch break each day.

In this class, we'll be building a single-page website (think onepagelove.com) with all the new hotness: HTML5 for structure and CSS3 for sweet visual flourishes like animations, gradients, rounded corners, and drop shadows. I'll show you how easy it is to use web fonts for typography (down with Arial amiright?!). CSS3 provides advanced selectors, graphical enhancements, and better font support that makes our sites more visual appealing without using font image replacement techniques, complex JavaScript, or graphics tools.

To get the most out of this class, you should have a working knowledge of basic HTML and CSS. You may have taken Intro to HTML through Girl Develop It, or you have built a site for fun.

To help you gauge whether or not this class is a good fit given your current skill set, you must take this mandatory quiz. Anything better than 70% should allow you to follow along in the class. A review will be provided before we start the new material and you can view the material we'll be basing our class on our website (look under "Intermediate HTML"). If you have additional questions, feel free to post them below.

Hi Yasmine. I tried to call but your mailbox is full. Given the varying weather situations in different areas this morning, I just wanted to let you know that we had little snow and I can get to the class pretty easily so if there is a last minute cancellation that is done by phone or not through this system, I would be able to come over at short notice and would be willing to work with you to arrange the payment or reimbursement to whomever, etc. If anyone needs to reach me, I can send my cell # via email.

Hey everyone, here's what we'll do if the weather forecast turns out to be right. We'll base our schedule on SEPTA's. If SEPTA experiences significant delays or the City declares an emergency by 7am Saturday morning, class will be postponed. If that happens, we'll look at rescheduling for the weekend of March 9/10.

Thanks, Yasmine. I'm definitely nervous, since I'm coming from Doylestown, which is supposed to get hit pretty hard tonight. If the city isn't hit as hard as my area, and I can't make it down for class, what are my options? Could I use my payment towards another GDI class?

      February 8, 2013

    • Yasmine M.

Yes, as long as it's the same class so we can make sure the right teacher is reimbursed!

Hello - please advise as I am also on the wait list. How will we know if spots become available? Should we just plan to attend? Can you set a deadline as to when you will reach out or determine if those on the wait list can attend if people cancel?
    Thank you

Hi, Alisesha. As I said earlier (and I may be mistaken, but I'm sure Yasmine will correct me, if so), I think Meetup will automatically assign spots to people on the waiting list, if registered people drop out.

Of course, we have no control over if or when that will happen, but if you have a time by which you must make a decision (which is perfectly reasonable), my best suggestion is this: If you haven't heard by your personal deadline that you have a spot in the class, you probably want to remove yourself from the waiting list. Who knows? Maybe someone further down the list from you lives next door to Indy Hall and can come over in her pajamas, if she is offered a slot at 10:15. :)

We run this particular class every couple of months, so be sure to keep an eye on the group, if you don't get a spot for this weekend. I know it's not your best case scenario, but stay tuned, and we'll all do our best.

Yes, Meetup will automatically send an email to everyone on the waiting list. The first person to pay for the class will get the spot.

I hear there might be inclement weather this weekend. Is there a plan, just in case?

    February 7, 2013

    • Elise W.

I have been considering this as well, and so far it doesn't seem like Philly is going to be hit too hard (NWS is still saying 1-3 inches). I will be taking SEPTA, so as long as things are running pretty normally, I intend to be there. I am not sure if there is an official GDI policy regarding weather.

Hi all. Any idea what the chances are that people on the wait list will make it into the class, and how I will know if that happens? Should I continue to check this page and if I am still on the wait list by Saturday morning, assume I should not show up?

    Thanks.

    • Elise W.

Joanne, that's a good question. I think the official notification would come if someone officially declined their spot in the meetup. If that were to happen at the last minute, I would be ok with you joining us a little later, though I realize that may not be convenient for you.
Maybe Yasmine has some better insight into the workings of Meetup. :)

Is using Firefox instead of Chrome a possibility? If Chrome-alone, what version do you require? Thanks, Mary

    January 30, 2013

    • Elise W.

Firefox will be ok, if you have firebug installed. Chrome is what I'll be running live demos on, so probably a bit easier to follow. As for version, just grab the latest stable build.

This was a great course! Unfortunately, I missed the follow-up study group (stupid flu!). Any chance I could just jump in on the study group this time?

    January 8, 2013

    • Yasmine M.

Hey Rachel - absolutely. We'll post the Study Group as a separate Meetup when the time comes. Keep up an eye out!

Allison, how much of html*5* will be in the class?

    January 2, 2013

    • Allison W.

Hi Elise, We'll discuss and implement the most commonly used HTML5 elements such as header, footer, nav, article, and section and briefly touch on lesser used elements such as video, audio, and cavas.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
