Intro to HTML/CSS

This HTML/CSS course runs for two consecutive Saturdays on January 12th and January 19th from 12:45pm to 5pm.

Want to learn how to build your own website? Already have your own site and want to have more control over it? Interested in learning to program but want to start small? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, this course is for you!

This beginner program will guide you through the basics of HTML/HTML5 and CSS and assist you along the way as you develop your own website. You may also be interested in the Intermediate class, coming up on the weekend of February 2nd.

About the teacher: Jenn loves coffee, kittens, and is a leading authority on structural semantic markup and CSS. She has been coding since 1999 and is currently the Interactive Development Director at Happy Cog. Jenn also blogs regularly at the development focused site, The Nerdary, maintains her own site, contributes monthly to .net Magazine, and is, of course, on Twitter.

Tech Requirements:

  1. Your laptop.
  2. A modern browser with either Chrome and the "Web Developer" extension or Firefox and Firebug installed.
  3. A text editor. We recommend Sublime Text 2 (It's free and available for both Mac and PC).

You can take a sneak peak at the slides here: Look for the HTML and CSS core curriculum.

    Hi Yasmine,
Please reserve a spot for me on the last day as I missed the last class. Thank you. S.

Hey everyone, just a note we're repeating this class on March 30th/31st. For those that missed the last day, email us if you'd like us to save you a seat to make it up. Also, we're looking for TA's. If you want to help other newbies learn HTML by answering questions, email us at philly at girl develop it dot com. It also makes for a great review!

Thanks to everyone who completed our survey. It was our first time trying the two Saturday format and it looks like people really enjoyed it. Keep the feedback coming!

If you're interested in taking the next step in improving your HTML skills, take a look at Elise's HTML5 course. There are 9 spots left and it always sells out - I hope we'll see some of you there!

Hi Suzanne and Sonya! We're so sorry you had to miss today. We do offer a make-up opportunity that can be applied only to the same class the next time it is offered. We are in the process of organizing another Intro class with Jenn Lukas in the next couple of months, date TBA. Please contact us again when the meetup is announced to make arrangements.

Good Afternoon, I, too, will not be able to attend today. I would love to make up the session as well in February. Else, I will follow the slides and contact you offline for assistance. Thx, S.

My son is sick so I won't be able to attend today's second part. Would there be any way I could come back to the next session in February?

Any chance you are going to be able to squeeze another in today?

Hey Jessica, our goal is to offer it once a quarter!

Can you offer it sooner since so many of us were waitlisted?

      January 12, 2013

  • Yasmine M.

Hey all, just a friendly reminder to make sure you have the software downloaded for class today. It'll help us cover more topics so you can finish more of your site! See the listing above or Jenn's email. See you soon!

Do I need this class to take the HTML5/ CSS3 class?

    January 7, 2013

    • Lisa B.

Good question! While GDI does not formally require prerequisites, we do want students to be at a level where you can get the full benefit of the class and so the class can move forward together at an appropriate place. HTML5/CSS3 is intended for students that have already acquired a basic knowledge. Have you taken any html/css course before? You can self assess your readiness for that course by taking the mandatory quiz linked to on the course page as well as looking at the slides for the intro class that are linked to on the course page to determine if you are at an appropriate level for the class.

Let me know if you'd like TA help. I may not be able to do both days but I can swing at least one of them!

Absolutely! That is so wonderful you offered. We could use help on the 19th from noon to a little after 5. Would that work? Thank you!

Really looking forward to the class. Cheers !
