Power of Change - New Media: New Communities

Many people argue that our very idea of community is changing as our society because more diverse and as we use social networks and the new media to connect with others.

This event will be associated with Social Media Week and will focus on how the digital age and especially the New Media is fundamentally changing our ideas of community and how it can provide new and immediate channels for communities and individuals to report on and make their own news.

The speakers through case studies and insights that bwill open this up to debate and discussion.

To underline the point of change we are aiming to stream this meeting live and to also have it available on an Internet TV Channel with live twitter feedback. We are also aiming to work with an Internet Radio channel to record parts of the meeting for broadcasting there as well.

Helping us with this will be

Dr Robert Davies is a Senior Visiting Fellow at Cass Business School, City University London. His book, The Era of Global Transition: Crises and opportunities in a new world, provides a range of tools for business leaders to use to explore the implications of a new world order.

Emma Rigby Is the Founder & Director of

Love Your DoorStep is the first ever "Interactive Directory" that connects local people directly with local products and services. We build from the community up, via a number of social media platforms, where by the community have a voice and share what is going on and where to find things on their DoorStep.
It is also linked with an Internet Radio Channel.

Dr Suhail Chughtai is an Orthopaedic Surgeon and also founder of TV Apex an Internet based TV Channel originally set up to link the Pakistani Diaspora residing in UK with others across the globe. This has now expanded into a project to link communities of all faith and none and to use Internet TV as a way of community building. In brief TV Apex is not simply a TV Channel but also has a vision and philosophy behind its creation.

We may have a fourth speaker and details will be added soon.

The Westminster Hub is collaborating with us in offering this meeting so we will have a mixed audience of networkers from GlobalNet21, young professionals from The Hub and those involved in Internet Radio and television.

If definition of community need to or has no choice but redefinte, then what will happen to the community in town planning? Will we loss the social bonding and physical touch of our neighbourhood?

The Community of distinct individuals or distinct communities is the bases of business growth, it is people somehow fitting a format that has less to do with what makes us human and more with what our business system needs to give technology and services a justification. However, without personal meetings we do not have community in a human real sense and society anymore. The final step in such a process would be to dissolve the physical existence of people in a digital cloud into a big singularity. I think before that could happen (some) people's own curiosity and gravitation towards difference to gain spiritually and intellectually together with universal diversity principals will get the upper-hand. That is why excesses in any form eventually are rejected , regardless of the powerful position some individuals may have gathered.

Not sure where we got with the discussion tonight. But the discussion may continue either at a further event or privately with some of the interesting people I met. So, over all outcome is positive.

Communication has become global via the new media in our digital age. We are now able to communicate and respond to people whom we would never have had access to or connected with. With every aspect of communication there has to be personal and mutual responsibility so that the communication and interaction remains productive and progressive. The instantaneous transmission of blogging and micro-blogging means that communication can often be almost too spontaneous. With any users' powerful tool, users will need to refine their skills and have a degree of judgement over their contribution/s through their new found medium of exploration and interaction
