WEBINAR - Local Authorities Supporting and Facilitating Self Reliant Communities

  • June 5, 2014 · 2:00 PM
  • Online Meeting

This Webinar will focus on the culture change necessary within agencies to facilitate active and self-reliant communities. It will look at the work of Wolverhampton City Council in preparing their staff to work with communities in a step by step approach to achieve self-reliance

Their approach has focused in its first stages on developing training packages for employees who are on the front line with communities to ensure that where communities come up with an idea to be active in their communities - eg to take over a piece of land, develop a food bank etc – thatcouncil staff have a ‘can do’ approach within agencies that helps them to do this They have also developed an employee volunteering policy within the City Council to enable communities to be supported directly in the delivery of their priorities

This Webinar will be presented by Sheila Collett who manages the Wolverhampton Local Neighbourhood Partnerships (LNPs) that provides the means for local communities throughout Wolverhampton to work with service providers and commissioners in shaping the design, planning and delivery of public services.

This was interesting, provided alot to think about. It is good to understand that councils are steady in there change they bring, it should reflect on other councils.

This is something quiet interesting. It is understood by a large majority that if something is presented that communities have to offer to better there peoples lives, the council will decline (commonly), as a reason of money or resources. While this is a legitimate problem no doubt, there should be a sense of understanding within councils, and options to overcome this common barrier. One is that councils should look beyond the bureaucracy that lingers and direct a new approach to improving lives of there people, by having organising events and getting the public involved in the direction of there future, and working with the public to overcome issues. A reminder must be sent, this can do spirit works both ways, it must be present in the people and council member/staff. It is encouraging that there are councils beginning to set the wheels and take responsibility of directing that new approach in there peoples lives.
