TRAIL EXPLORATION SERIES
It's our goal to run on every single trail in the South Bay! Each exploration run will be on a different trail segment around the area. Runs will vary in length from 5 miles and upwards. Start times will also vary depending on the run length or the mood. Join us as we explore the Bay Area by foot!
TODAY'S EXPLORATION RUN - PENITENCIA CREEK TRAIL
For this event, we will be exploring the Penitencia Creek Trail in it's entire 2.6ish mile length. This will be a 5.5 mile round-trip run starting from Mabury Road by the Independence High School Baseball fields, and ending at Noble Avenue about a half mile west of Alum Rock Park.

We will park on Mabury Road, right next to the high school baseball diamonds. Parking is allowed here during the day. The trailhead is directly across the street.
We'll take the trail north through the park area, passing a pond which will be on our right. We continue north passing a workout area and restroom. There is a drinking fountain here. Continue to North Jackson Avenue.
At North Jackson Avenue, we will take a left and follow the sidewalk to the crosswalk. The crosswalk connects to the trail on the other side of North Jackson Avenue. The trail parallels Mossdale Way for a way and then heads under the 680 Freeway. The trail continues until it reaches North Capital Avenue.
At North Capital Avenue, we will take a right and follow the sidewalk to the crosswalk at the intersection of North Capital Avenue and Gilchrist Drive. We will cross North Capital Avenue, also crossing the light rail tracks, and on the other side take a left heading north on North Capital Avenue.
We will cross a bridge over the creek and see the next trail segment on the right, just before Penitencia Creek Road. We continue along the trail until we get to a mini-road called Viceroy Way. We will take a left here and then use the crosswalk across Penitencia Creek Road. We are now in Penitencia Creek Park.
In the park, the trail forks and goes around the lake on either side. We can choose which path looks the most fun! The trail continues through the park until it reaches Piedmont Road. We'll cross Piedmont at the stoplight crosswalk, take a left, and connect back onto the trail on the other side of the bridge.
The trail continues along the river until we reach some reservoir ponds. We can go around the ponds on either side and connect back onto the same trail on the other side. Shortly thereafter, the trail ends at Noble Avenue. We will retrace our steps back to our cars.
