Thursday Night First

Paragraph Slam @

The Upstart Crow

On the beautiful shore of the San Diego harbor (Seaport Village by any other name). You loved our last event — and we had a full house at the Do Thai Cottage (please remember to rate the events — it gets more people interested). Our Winner, Paul Barbano, needs some competition, so come out and read the first paragraph of your project!!!

We will be voting for the best paragraph — and the venue is open to the public (just to listen not to do a reading) — so be there to vote for the best one – which could be yours! Winner gets a copy of my latest book Ghosthunting Southern California and a drink from the cafe.Even if you don't want to read, be there to support others — and who knows, maybe next time you'll want to read.

This is going to be a friendly, fun event — so make sure you get there on time so you can vote with all of the readers in mind. We're going to have a blast — so come blow us away with your work, because no one can read it with more heart than you. Although, if you feel more comfortable reading someone else's work, or having someone else read your work — go for it. Let me know ahead of time (in your RSVP) if you're going to read because I'm making up voting forms.... We'll know the winner before the event is over.

http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/0/1/a/event_229065082.jpegI'm going to give you some advice from someone who was bigger than life in real life, the great Allen Ginsberg whom I had the pleasure of meeting while he was reading in Paris at the wonderful bookstore Shakespeare & Company on the Left Bank. He had a habit of reading on the cafe tables...naked. He said, If you want to be a poet (or in this case, writer), you have to put your dick on the table. And that he did, and now you must also (but, do keep your clothes on, there are laws about that now).

And I'd like to remind you — PLEASE DO NOT send me your work for comment, that's not how it works, and you agreed not to do that in the rules you read when you signed up. Just a friendly reminder. Thank you!

Allow yourself some time to get there — there's traffic everywhere at that hour that can cause at least a 30 minute delay — and give yourself time to park. There is paid parking, but bring your parking ticket inside to get validated, though you probably will end up owing a few bucks for parking. Here is a map for Seaport Village http://www.seaportvillage.com/directions

When you park drive past the ticket booth, go straight, almost to the other end. The Upstart Crow is facing the parking lot, so you won't have a problem having to walk to far back to your car. If you go to this page http://www.seaportvillage.com/directions look to the far right of the page above the FB icon, you can download a PDF of the store map right there. Like I said, give yourself some time. You can also bring a friend to the event for support, or go to an early dinner at one of the wonderful venues just seconds away that are directly on the harbor (but, don't be late!). Try and order a drink while we're there, we want them to keep asking us back — it's a great venue.
