Movie: Prometheus, the Search for Our Creator

Prometheus - Directed by Ridley Scott

In the late 21st century, a star map is discovered by archeologists Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway within the archaeological imagery of several otherwise unconnected cultures, including Magdalenian, Mesoamerican and Mesopotamian civilizations. This leads to the crew of the vessel Prometheus going on a scientific expedition, sponsored by the Weyland Corporation, to follow the map to find the origins of mankind."%20frameborder="0"%20allowfullscreen

(Cont'd from prev. post) I’m still frustrated with This current model of me, as well as the world at large.

I started asking “The Biggie Questions” decades ago – in the mid-‘70’s--& I don’t have any MORE Answers now than when I began. In fact; I have more Questions than answers. And I still don’t know “What the Point of It All IS.” That was the question I first began asking that put me in consternation/conflict to the point I got depressed & than I got functioning again by plugging in some “surface satisfaction” “answer” – which no longer satisfies me.

    (Conclusion. . .for now. . .)

(Cont'd from prev. post) That because he/she created us, he/she OWNS us--& therefore we have no SAY? If so; then that implies we have no right to “autonomy”—like the robots that are created. We are just “property” of the creator? Where is the love? An artist or any other creator has “rough drafts” all the time with things he/she creates & makes “improvements.” Are we just “rough drafts” On The Way to the Ultimate Perfection—so the creator has the right to destroy us?

Or . . . maybe there IS no “creator.” We’re just “flotsam” adrift in a senseless universe. I have a right to my cynicism. I’ve been working to improve this “model” (me) all my adult life—And I’m still frustrated and not content with "hypotheses."

The movie felt unsatisfying & depressing to me -– to think of the monster in the cave being so cruel to the female explorer & others. And to think that he was related in some way to the woman—her creator, as she first thought or created also by the same creator? The question that propelled her on to find answers: How could (WHY? would) a creator create & then want to destroy his/her creation?--is the same question I’d ask of the traditional god & the concept of heaven & hell. If the creator creates a faulty creation, then it’s the creatOR’s fault—not the createe’s fault! It’s cruel & senseless to worship a god who would destroy his/her creation & send anyone to hell. He/she should “go to hell” him/herself!!

Q.: Are we just “rough drafts” that it’s O. K. to “toss in the wastebasket” because we’re not “perfect” –or new & better models have been invented? Is the creator angry at his/her Own incompetence—so thinks it’s O. K. to destroy his/her creation. (Cont'd on next post)

I'm looking forward to the movie tomorrow and discussions after. Some fascinating people have RSVP'd: a Verizon technician, a Ph.D., and my friend Terrence. I'm sure we'll have some great conversations! See you Sunday at 1PM.

For newbies, let me ask: are the two meetings on May 18th (noon and 1pm) considered one meeting, so newbies can pay $5 and see what the group is about?

Dan, The noon event is an additional one that runs into the 1PM main meeting. If you're a first-timer then you can pay our $5 guest fee and attend both.
