I agree. The doctors, dentists, hospitals, drug companies & insurance
companies have organanized a health system that produces huge profits for
them, but leaves out the ones who cannot pay. Two nearby countries have
National Health Care that works for them - Canada & Cuba. But these are
small countries & to make it work for the huge & diverse population of the
USA will take a determined effort on the part of the medical professionals &
politicians.
When I visited Cuba, I was very impressed. Sure, advanced heart & brain
surgery is not really available, but they go mostly for preventive medicine.
It is organized by neighborhoods, where a doctor (usually a woman) makes
diagnoses & hands out medicine from what may be no more than a front porch.
Something serious, such as a broken bone or need of X-Ray, they go to a
clinic that serves several neighborhoods. Surgery, or advanced stays they
move on to the city hospital. When we were at the hospital I observed the
Emergency Room - 3 medics were just standing around. I asked how many
patients they treated & they said about 1000 per year, say about 3 per day.
Cuba also has a medical school, at a former Military Officers Camp, & are
training doctors from all over Latin America & even some from the USA.
These doctors earn about a dollar a day. How do they do it, & why do they do
it? I felt a dedication to care for people that reminded me of the town
doctor when I was growing up in Iowa.
