That is SO hiLARious! PUNdit power. Wonder what the context was -- definitely Blasphemy of a "mortal sin" level. Yes; thanks, Judy too.
Otherwise; on another note, Jack & other members of OFH; I too will plan on making a small donation at the Freethought Party. I am very disappointed that Dan Barker will not be coming--all because the OFH Treasury was a couple $hundred short--& to think that just 10 people paying their dues could have ensured his coming. I was really looking forward to hearing a full-scale speech of his after meeting him at the Literature Distribution at the Unitarian Church last summer & having a brief conversation with him there. I also was hoping to hear more of his marvelous music.
When I read you "heart-rending" appeal, I was relieved that I had paid my annual dues in Sept. and that I didn't have to feel one of the "culpable" readers. However, like our OFH member Dan's example & Jeffrey's joining him, I too, am "Moved" to donate something additionally myself. I know it's too late to "retrieve" Dan for the Party; however, with more $ coming into the Treasury, we can get him here in March. That sounds like a good "consolation prize."
Thank you, Jack -- & Linda -- for letting us know the status of things--& for sharing your feelings with us. I do hope that this year, in contrast to last year's Party planning efforts on your part, Jack, that you don't feel like you're "herding cats"--as I remember your commenting such when I arrived at Judy's house for the Party last year & you met me at the door with that comment--apparently still feeling that the "herding" was still going on. Maybe this year, we can be more like "homing pigeons" who know where to come & roost--& RSVP in courteous time--w/o your having to feel anxious or send out undue time-consuming reminders.
Jack, you have labored many, many hours to bring us a year of tremendous speakers & programs. And Linda, thank you for all your "behind-the-scenes" work with the treasury, the greeting table, refreshments, etc. I, personally, have learned so much -- & profusely thank you & those who have helped you that I don't know to thank individually. Where else could I have gone & learned so much & had the quality of group interaction--all for $20--for a YEAR!
One of the programs that particularly stands out in my mind is the documentary film about Scientology in May at the monthly mtg. at the Univ. Club -- & the fine job you did in finding, preparing & bringing to us several videos of signs of a cult.
The Orlando Freethinkers & Humanists group is UNIQUE in all of Central Florida. There are hundreds of churches all teaching adherance to one line of thinking --that is "Party Line" of some kind. And there is only ONE group--(that's been around as long as OFH) that encourages independent thinking & questioning of All beliefs -- & even encouraging one's freedom to Not believe Anything -- to just be skeptical & open-minded or Agnostic (& open to evolving truth) as I consider myself to be.
It's Refreshing! -- & important to the philosophical landscape of Central Florida. I'm glad I just "happened" to find this group as I was cruising through meetup group suggestions--& the word "Freethinker" caught my attention.
Again; Jack and Linda (& thanks to Jim too & Eric for the supportive work that both of you do in "behind-the-scene" ways to make things run smoothly), thank you for all that you have done for us this year--& for being so dedicated to "Making a Difference" -- to Providing an Alternative place to Go & Be & Think & Question -- & still be accepted.
Also, Jack, I've appreciated the many humor pieces you have brought to us & the laughter you have exhibited in your own countenance.
"Hats off to Jack, 'The Happy Heretic.'"
