Embedded Systems Group Kickoff

Let's get together to meet some new embedded development colleagues and to share a some ideas. We'll take some time for chatting and then have a presentation or two.

Cucumber is a tool for describing automated tests in plain English. It's great for establishing a common vocabulary for describing a product and its behavior among the various engineering disciplines that contribute to its design. While the tool is more commonly used with web applications, it also is useful for testing embedded components.

Other talks TBD.

I was Jim Hill's +1 for this. An interesting group.

I am not familiar with I2C, but need to learn. I could do SPI in's and outs and using the internal interrupts to control and SCI UART on a TI DSP. Depending on the size of the crowd, we could do it here at KFR.

I've been thinking that a comparison of serial interfaces might be interesting for some. UARTs, I2C and SPI are the most common serial interfaces. Even though they are all simple serial interfaces there are interesting differences.

I'm trying to think of a hardware topic that would be simple enough to present and be interesting to others. There's the stuff I do for work with includes a variety of contollers/sensors, and then there are my personal interests. Outside of work I follow many DIY projects (do it yourself) like 3D printing, CNC machining, and some of the quadracopter stuff.

We could also talk about IO functions typically integrated in microcontrollers and some of their details and usage. GPIO, I2C, SPI, UARTs, DACs, ADCs, DMA, etc. I'm most familiar with the NXP LPC17xxx devices.

Ideas? What would be of interest to you?

I am interested in the microcontroller features you mentioned - GPIO, I2C, SPI, etc. It would good to have a presentation in one of these topics with an example code and hardware circuit. I know I2C, so I can present that.

I can't make Thurs 6:00 pm. How late do you think the meetup will go. Suggested topic: Interrupt Service Routines (and I could present/lead discussion, modulo schedule.)

Thanks Larry, maybe you can present at the next meeting? I think that the meeting shouldn't last more than an hour and a half.

To Larry_P. I would be interested in this topic (Interrup Service Routines). This would be a good topic for a meetup.

Thank you Joshua, Katie, et al. It was great meeting all of you.

    Hi everyone,
I'm sorry I wasn't able to attend, though I had planned to.
I just got back from a business trip from Washington (delayed a week because of the snow storm last week).
I got back too late to make it to the meeting.

I hope to make the next one!

It was great to meet everyone tonight!

It was a good start. Attendance was great for a kickoff meeting. Thanks to Josh for the introduction to Cucumber, and for the initiative to organize this meetup.

    Looking forward to meeting everyone.

I wish I could be at the inaugural event, but I will be away from Mass. for the rest of the week.
    Good luck!

We'll see you at the next one! Thanks! Katie

Conflict this week. I'll catch you next time.

@deadwinter, great suggestion about "tips for joining the industry". There will definitely be folks at the meeting that can give great advice. In the future, we might run a seminar where we can all learn or practice a skill.

"What to know if you're joining the industry" is always a welcome topic :)

Thanks for the note, Katie. I look forward to meeting some new folks at the meeting next week. I think that a TDD seminar would be too complicated to set up for our initial meetup. We can do it at a future meeting. At this meeting, I'll present an introduction to "Cucumber". This is an interesting testing scripting tool that embedded folks may not have heard of.

    Hi everyone!
Are you getting ready for the Kickoff next week? Please tell a friend!

My co-workers here in engineering are formulating a topic. Stayed tuned!

    Thanks!

Had a brief discussion with Josh today. In the end we are wondering what topics would be most interesting for everyone. If you are so inclined... please suggest topics that would be of interest you (and don't limit it to one topic). Maybe some common themes will emerge.

I found out I will be able to attend after all.

Sorry, can't attend that night, but hopefully the next one!

Hi Bobby, looking forward to re-connecting when you can attend.

I wish I could make it, but the timing is really bad for me. I am looking forward to attending future sessions though.

We can have the meeting at Foliage and members of our engineering team can also speak.

I'd be interested in learning about 3-D printing, and I'm sure that it is a topic that would have broad appeal.
