Did you know that in only 100 square ft., you can grow enough wheat for 20 loaves of bread? Enough corn for over 500 tortillas? Enough quinoa for 30 hefty servings? And you get a ton of compost material! Come learn about the growth habits of these crops (barley, oats, rye, sorghum, millet, and amaranth too!), as well as how to harvest, thresh, winnow and cook these grains that are not often grown within city limits. The instruction and discussion will be followed by interactive demonstrations of transplanting, threshing, and winnowing different grains, and maybe even a special tasting of some delicious grain-based treats!
Eric Buteyn, a native of Colorado, recently returned to the Mile High City from Northern California where he spent three years working with John Jeavons, the author of How to Grow More Vegetables, two years as farm manager. He is a certified GROW BIOINTENSIVE instructor and is now a part of the Produce Denver team. He has quickly plugged into the Denver urban farming scen, eager to share what he's learned about full-diet, closed-loop, regenerative farming with anyone who wants to be a part of the challenging conversation of true sustainability.
