As to the books cost money problem (a problem I have too); besides the library, a good place to get books is http://www.betterworldbooks.com/ which has free eco shipping in the US and benefits literacy.  It's a bit like Amazon, where you can get used books - often from library sales actually.   Be sure to check the bargain bin which has 5 books for $15.  And you can donate spare change at the end of your order for carbon neutral shipping.
