Backyard Chickening Panel Discussion with Bucky Buckaw & others!
Details
The host of The Backyard Chicken Broadcast, Bucky Buckaw, is coming to NH and will moderate this panel of local chickeners. Come to learn how to keep your own chickens, to connect with other small scale farmers, and/or to meet others interested in healthy, sustainable food raising. A representative from The Durham Agricultural Commission will
provide an update on the recent changes to Durham's zoning ordinance that enables chickens to be raised in most zones in town.
This event is free and open to the public. We will ask for free-will donations to cover space rental and our meetup group expenses. Children are welcome.
More info on the panel will be posted as we get closer to the event. We might also be welcoming the Buckaw flock of three at the event! And a sing-along to a poultry song is also rumored to be possible!
Our panel will include:
Peter Bixby, Dover NH: "We started keeping chickens in the summer of 2008, after my wife decided that it would not be such a bad idea. (I couldn't convince her, but Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle did.) My motivation was not so much eggs as pest control. The chickens help reduce the pest load in the orchard and garden."
Emma, Barrington NH: a seventh grade student at Barrington Middle School, where she plays baritone sax in both the 7/8 band and the jazz band. She enjoys painting, drawing, photography, jewelry making and many styles of music. She plays the violin, saxophone and ukulele. In addition to her parents and siblings, she shares her home with two small dogs, a cat and a tortoise. Emma began her adventure in backyard chicken keeping this past spring with 16 day old chicks.
Steve Diamond, Barrington NH: Steve has spent the last few years focusing on homesteading and permaculture projects. He has been keeping chickens for about five years.
Leslie & Carly Stevens, Sidewalk Farms, Portsmouth NH: Leslie is a UNH Master Gardener and Natural Resource Steward and was introduced to Permaculture through these classes. Leslie's daughter Carly has grown up with gardening and urban agriculture all around her. They have had chickens as part of their urban homestead for a few years.
Here's more info on The Backyard Chicken Broadcast: Bucky Buckaw's Backyard Chicken Broadcast has great info, good stories, and a goal of creating a more localized and sustainable world. He's keeps chickens in NYC and meets lots of chickeners even there!
