Annie Annie Over Olompali

Join us for a hike led by Michael Landram in the Marin County Mt. Burdell Open Space Preserve and Olompali State Park. Let’s celebrate the New Year from atop Mt. Burdell, the fifth highest point in Marin County. Then we’ll descend into the depths of historic Olompali, a place that has been continuously occupied by humans for the last 8,000 years! This hike has everything except flat and easy.

Trailhead: This hike requires a car shuttle. We’ll meet at the Olompali State Park parking lot. The park is located three miles north of Novato on U.S. 101. The entrance is accessible only to southbound traffic from Highway 101. Northbound vehicles should continue north past the park and make a safe U-Turn in order to travel south and enter the park.

There is an $8/vehicle parking/day use fee at the park. From there, we will shuttle cars to the trailhead at the end of Verdad Way off of San Carlos Way off of San Marin Drive in Novato. Hikers that wish to go part way up and back should meet us there.

Route: This hike goes up the San Carlos Fire Road, up the Old Quarry Trail (this segment is steep so we’ll go slow), and across the Burdell Mt. Fire Road to the Open Space/Park boundary. Then we’ll descend on the Mt. Burdell Trail to the parking lot. The hike starts at an altitude of 215 feet and climbs to a high point of 1,485 feet before descending to the parking lot at 80 feet. Total distance is about 6 miles (2 miles up and 4 miles down). We’ll plan 4 hours of hiking and ½ hour for the shuttle. Think twice before signing up for the entire length; it is a long way considering the climb.
