6 Trails, 3 Preserves, 1 Park, and a Watershed!

This is truly a mini Novato adventure! This 8.85 mile hike will traverse Mount Burdell, O’Hair Park, Little Mountain, Verissimo Hills, and the North Marin Water District, without ever stepping into suburbia. Along the way we’ll navigate fire roads, single track trails, pass three water tanks, cross trail bridges, and more. The hike gradually ascends to a maximum height of 855 feet within the first 2.5 miles before leveling off for a flat and easy stroll before slowly descending.

Route: We’ll head up Mount Burdell on the Fieldstone Trail, turn east on the Middle Burdell Fire Road, take the Dwarf Oak Trail to O’Hair Park, connect with the Reuben Kaehler Trail, then head southwest on the Little Mountain Trail, pass into the Verissimo Hills Open Space Preserve and the North Marin Water District via the Stafford Lake Trail until we reach our end point on Vineyard Road. At a 23 minute mile pace, this hike should take 3 hours and 15 minutes to complete.

Trailhead: Meet at the end of Vineyard road. We’ll leave half the cars there and then drive to our starting point which is the Fieldstone Trail located at 475 Fieldstone Drive.

Recommended Gear:  Bring water, snacks, sturdy footwear, and weather appropriate clothing.

I loved the option for everyone to be able to hike at their best pace - slow walkers or fast walkers. And Michael, thank you for the little talks on history and fauna.

My apologies for needing to cancel last minute; but my dishwasher overflow just spewed water all over my counters & floor! Tomorrow, I need to call a plumber or learn how to clean out all the hoses and filters. So much for my 1st Green Boot Hikers MU...

Had the overflow geyser fixed by great handyman! (Would have much preferred hiking, but homeownership duty called...)

Hi John, I am coming from out of the area (Fairfield) and Google maps has me ending up at two different places, depending upon whether I put in Vineyard Road or 475 Feldcrest.

1st set of directions: Take Atherton Ave exit toward Black Point. Continue onto San Marin Dr. Continue onto Sutro Ave, Turn right onto Vineyard Rd. Looking at the map, this puts me west of Miwok Park and East of Indian Hills Golf Course.

2nd set of directions: Take Atherton Ave exit toward Black Point. Turn left onto Atherton Ave. Turn right onto Redwood Blvd. Take the 1st left onto Wood Hollow Dr. Turn left onto Fieldstone Dr. Looking at the map, this puts me northeast of Miwok Park.

I don’t want to miss everyone. Which of these directions do I use?

Hi Judy. Take the first set of directions. San Marin drive become sutro. Make a right onto Vineyard. Take vineyard road until it becomes gravel. We'll be there!

Hi John, where exactly on Vineyard Road are we going to meet? You said at the end of the road, will it be a parking or something? I'm not familiar with the area.
    Thanks

    • John K.

Hi Tina. We'll be meeting on Vineyard Rd where the road turns to gravel. All our cars will be parked there so we'll be hard to miss. See you Sat.
