Eagles, Indians, and Roller Coasters

Join us for a hike led by Michael Landram in the Marin County Ignacio Valley and Indian Valley Open Space Preserves. This hike provides a number of ridge viewpoints with different angles on the world combined with a variety of closed canopy forest conditions.  We’ll throw in a waterfall too just for the fun of it.

Trailhead: Meet between the addresses 1681 and 1701 Indian Valley Road in Novato at 10am.  Half the cars will stay there.  The other half will shuttle to the end of Eagle Drive, where the hike begins.

Route: This is an approximately 4.6 mile hike that we’ll plan to do in 3.75 hours including car shuttle time.  It is a roller coaster of a hike, going up and down 5 different times.  From the end of Eagle Drive (300 ft. elevation), we’ll hike up the Eagle Trail and the Montura Fire Road (up to 700, down to 500, up to 700), then down an unnamed trail to Pacheco Pond (200 ft.).  It’s up from there on the Waterfall Trail to 550 ft. (half way mark) then down to the waterfall at 300 ft. It’s up from there on the Susan Alexander Trail to 550 ft. then down to the junction with the Witzel Trail at 400 ft.  Then we hike up the Witzel Trail to 600 feet and finally down to the Indian Valley Road and back to our cars at 150 feet where the roller coaster comes to a full stop!  Those that don’t want the full up and down experience may leave the group at Pacheco Pond or at the waterfall for an easy stroll back to the cars.

Preserve Map:

Gear: Bring water, snack, sturdy footwear, and weather appropriate clothing.

Weather: Rain does not cancel.  In fact, I really hope it rains ‘cause we need it!

See you there!

It was great to see everyone again and fun to meet some new folks as well. Next time I think I will take some Dramamine b4 the up and down hills. Definitely a good workout. Thanks.
