Flatlander’s Delight!

Join us for a hike on the levees around the former Hamilton Air Force Base followed by the first ever Greenboots Group Dinner (see separate dining announcement). This is the fifth in a monthly series of hikes traversing all of Novato in a counterclockwise pattern.  This time we are coming down out of the hills to walk near the bay.  The area including the former airstrips is being restored to tidal marsh and wetlands.  By the date of this hike, the outer levee will be breached and we will walk beside an area experiencing tidal action for the first time in many decades.

Trailhead: Meet alongside Bel Marin Keys Blvd. just before the entrance to the Keys in Novato.  Half the cars will stay there.  The other half will shuttle to the south end of Hangar Ave. where the hike begins.

Route: This is an approximately 4.7 mile hike that we’ll plan to do in 2.5 hours including car shuttle time.  The first leg goes southeast out about a mile for a view of the newly breached levee (brings binoculars if you like), then back a mile to a point near the cars (some may wish to end the hike at this point).  The second leg goes north behind homes and hangars on one side and new marshland on the other.  It then continues north eventually passing alongside Pacheco Pond and back the Bel Marin Keys Blvd.

Gear: Bring water, sun protection, sturdy footwear, and appropriate clothing.

Weather: Rain does not cancel.

Great first outing with you all. Pretty area, friendly people, much appreciation to Michael and John for organizing, and to Michael for sharing his knowledge about the area!

It was a very interesting and informative hike and nice to see everyone as well. Think we ruffled a few feathers on that beautiful Swan (who called it a Pelican?) at the end though. Thanks.

It was a delightful walk indeed in an area I had never visited before. Thank you John and Michael for organizing this Green Boot outing. Oh, and extra special thanks go to Michael for sharing his informative tidbits about the history of the marshland with the group!

I was really looking forward to this hike but there is so much traffic coming from Petaluma, I will never make 5pm . Left Petaluma at 4:15.

Do you know what the terrain is like on the levee. Is it compacted gravel, just dirt, dirt/small gravel mix, or larger road stones?

    May 17, 2014

    • Michael L.

It's a newly constructed wide trail of compacted small gravel on levees for about 4 miles, then an old single track dirt trail on levee most of the rest of the way, finishing with a short off levee single track of dirt.

Michael and John - I unexpectedly have a business meeting this afternoon so will miss the walk. Shoot. But all three of us (husband Jonathan, Daughter Daisy and me) will be a Las Guitarres at 7:30.
