Join us for a hike on the levees around the former Hamilton Air Force Base followed by the first ever Greenboots Group Dinner (see separate dining announcement). This is the fifth in a monthly series of hikes traversing all of Novato in a counterclockwise pattern. This time we are coming down out of the hills to walk near the bay. The area including the former airstrips is being restored to tidal marsh and wetlands. By the date of this hike, the outer levee will be breached and we will walk beside an area experiencing tidal action for the first time in many decades.
Trailhead: Meet alongside Bel Marin Keys Blvd. just before the entrance to the Keys in Novato. Half the cars will stay there. The other half will shuttle to the south end of Hangar Ave. where the hike begins.
Route: This is an approximately 4.7 mile hike that we’ll plan to do in 2.5 hours including car shuttle time. The first leg goes southeast out about a mile for a view of the newly breached levee (brings binoculars if you like), then back a mile to a point near the cars (some may wish to end the hike at this point). The second leg goes north behind homes and hangars on one side and new marshland on the other. It then continues north eventually passing alongside Pacheco Pond and back the Bel Marin Keys Blvd.
Gear: Bring water, sun protection, sturdy footwear, and appropriate clothing.
Weather: Rain does not cancel.
