✨Theme "Mulching workshop/Garden Bed plan" - Sunday's Volunteering At PERMA CLUB

Details

That time of the year, that we all love. Dry, chill and sunny. Let's do farming and observing in the calm and green of Oasis, in Perma Club, ClearwaterBay.

We’re reaching out to all keen and curious gardeners that would like to experience and learn how to manage a garden in a forested area. Let it be public space, a balcony or a backyard, abundance can be designed and implemented in any landscape.

We will be separating the Meet Up into 3 Groups this weekend, each fulfilling common goals through different means. Please leave your comment with your preference of the group you want to join for the morning.

Morning Activity

  1. Mulching workshop (Sacha)

Safe, local & organic material collectionAn excellent way to keep fit! Mulching provides a great workout, chopping & carrying across onsiteExplanation of why we do it & the importance of cover

Learn why it’s important and how mulching can improve our soil structure and texture.

Many organic materials can be used to mulch. Mulching helps to retain soil moisture, regulate the soil temperature, suppress weed growth, and can also add an attractive aesthetic. Applied to the soil surface, around trees, paths, flower beds, it also helps to prevent soil erosion on slopes, and in production areas for flower and vegetable crops.

  1. Building a Herb Spiral – Alex

Herb spirals need little maintenance and when given tender loving care can provide beautiful fresh herbs all year round. They encompass all manner of permaculture principles from how close to house you can get it to including a small pond so frogs can do some of the slug hunting for you!

The idea is basically to get as many different herbs as possible in a confined area. The spiral and the subsequent height differences helps you create a number of different environmental conditions, which normally would not be possible in a small space. The small area also means that they are ideal for a small garden and harvesting and watering is easy.

WHAT IS HK PERMA CLUB?

HK Permaclub is an educative; inclusive space empowering the Hong Kong community to re-connect and re-harmonize human living spaces with nature. To achieve this, the organization uses ecological design principles that aim to improve and promote clean air, clean food and a healthy sustainable lifestyle. The site is a demonstration of ecological and cultural wealth where creative solutions are designed to resolve the world's most challenging ecological issues, many of which are spreading quickly throughout Hong Kong.

The guiding principles are simple; Care for People, Care for the Earth and Share of Surplus.

THE NEXT STEP

Since its birth in October 2012, Permaclub has connected hundreds of people in the Hong Kong community who seek an alternative to the concrete jungle lifestyle that has contributed to the unprecedented environmental crisis we currently face. In doing so, they have begun to transform the local food scene, growing an abundance of fresh organic food and engaging varied interest groups with workshops and open days.

HOW TO GET THERE:

From Hang Hau station, you can taxi pool with other volunteers - please organise this amongst yourselves.

Alternatively, you can follow these directions:

  1. Catch the MTR to Hang Hau station

  2. Get a taxi (green NT taxis are slightly cheaper approx. $35-40) to 38 Hang Hau Wing Lung Rd, off Clearwater Bay Rd

  3. Exit the taxi at Number 38.

  4. To the left of number 38, you will see a sign post for Little Palm Beach. Follow the road downhill, keeping the sign post on your right.

  5. About 10 metres past the sign post, you will find a (very) small rocky track on the right side of the road. This is a walking track only (no car access). Follow the track down and turn right where the track forks. There will be a sign for Perma Club pointing right.

Please contact Alex on 5333 2072 if you have any troubles on the day.
