Have you ever read a parenting book with the hope of doing everything possible for your child and to improve your own parenting style, only to find that once you put it down you never follow it?
Leslieville Psychotherapist Brian Baumal leads this Meetup for parents who want to take concrete actions to improve themselves and their children. Each month, participants read a book and come to discuss how they can implement what they have read with practical help and powerful advice tailored to each participant's individual parenting situation.
This unique session is part book-club and part support-group. Parents will explore what blocks them from reaching their full potential as parents and work at the growing edges of what is possible for them, their children and their families. This group is for anyone who wants to understand how to be a better parent while working towards greater possibilities for themselves personally.
We hold the sessions at Lil' Bean And Green Cafe, at 1133 Queen Street East in Leslieville (www.lilbeanandgreen.com). This kid and family-friendly cafe is a great spot to hold this group. The store is part cafe, where we will hold the group, and part play area for kids. Parents who need to bring their children with them, will find the play area a perfect spot to let their kids enjoy themselves, while parents discuss the book in the cafe area.
The cost for each Meetup is $15, and that goes exclusively towards a catered dinner by Lil Bean, with Sandwiches, salad, snacks, desert and drinks. Given our hectic lives as parents, we want to provide a meal to our participants.
The inaugural book is Naomi Aldort's "Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves". This book is excellent at enabling parents to be authentic human beings around their children, and the more range of humanity we show our children, the better children we raise. "Raising Our Children And Ourselves" spends a significant amount of time focusing on the parent's underlying attitudes, beliefs and "old patterns of behaviour" before discussing concrete planning strategies. The belief is that parents must continue to grow and raise themselves if they are going to be effective parents to their children. Naomi Aldort has her own website at www.naomialdort.com
"Raising Our Children and Raising Ourselves" can be ordered online. While there are some copies in bookstores throughout Toronto, the selection appears somewhat limited. Besides using national chains to order books, I recommend Roxanne Reads (www.roxannereads.com) to order books.
