OK, Fellow Synergist!
I'm delighted to advise that we're presenting our ambitious Health Maker Lab "Floor Plan" at this evening's Meetup Event.
To give you a "flavor taste," here's a zoom-in on our HML HEALTH CENTRAL---the heart and hub of our physical spaces. All our other HML activities and Action Centers are clustered around Health Central---which is completely surrounded by a kind of "ring" hallway that accesses other core areas.

You'll see Health Central sub-titled "HML's Community Hub, Creativity Lounge & Coffee House." We've labeled some of Central's key stations (clockwise from upper right): IDJ (Idea DiskJockey), Power Bar (refreshments & food), Healthnographer (idea capture) and Beans & Balls (relaxed cogitation and conversation).
These are just some of the novel HML concepts we'll unveil and explain this evening.
As ever, we'll be hoping to elicit your good critiques and added-value ideas.
WeWork Tech---our co-host---is graciously providing beer and pizza this evening. We pledge to feed you body and mind and spirit...come join-in!!

PS. If you've yet to make it out to one of our rich content, radical context Meetups, consider this one. We will have a number of "guests" in from WeWork Labs at Dumbo Heights (https://www.wework.com/locations/new-york-city/dumbo-heights). These are early-stage 'Preneurs who are curious about what we're doing in the LifeSci space. After all, the folks we're collaborating/co-hosting with at the WeWork Tech Meetup enthused: "Wow, very interesting meetup!" So, we'll be orienting HML newbies with a bit of prolog...come get caught up!
PPS. Please RSVP and kindly donate your nominal admission fee---$20---on this event page. (Say, if you can't make it this time---but still believe our efforts are worthy of support---try "Chipping In" via the green donate-button in our left SideBar. Every tangible gesture of approval---however denominated---keeps us moving ahead: socially, psychologically AND financially!)

Hi, Synergist!
One of the great means to spread the Health Maker Lab "word" is to catch the (editorial) "eye" of an important media platform.
Well, earlier this afternoon, Technical.ly Brooklyn (http://technical.ly/brooklyn/)---part of the stable of mostly Mid-Atlantic "Technical.ly covered" cities---published a piece on HML entitled:
"Why these citizen-scientists are launching a nonprofit maker lab focused on health! (http://technical.ly/brooklyn/2016/02/16/why-these-citizen-scientists-are-launching-a-nonprofit-maker-lab-focused-on-health/)"
Corporate Technical.ly's tagline is "Better cities through technology." As a mantra, most of you---I suspect---could happily chant along with that informed sentiment. And, that, too, is what Health Maker Lab is all about. Health and Healthcare betterment for our diverse citizenry in Brooklyn and NYC at large.
Enjoy the read. You'll see that are new and informative ideas in the story. (Hey, it's a "guest post;" and as a journo, I wrote it myself...with care, added-value and enthusiasm!)
Hope to see you at our February Meetup tomorrow (17 Feb) evening. We're unveiling our HML "Floor Plan"...a serious MILESTONE---revelatory and disruptive! Come join-in!

Good (and gelid) Morning, Synergist!
Maybe you should just burrow down deeper under your covers... And, muse on how we're going to educate, entertain and inspire you at our up-coming Health Maker Lab-centric meetup... (That's Wednesday, 17 February at WeWork Dumbo Heights.)

Last night I was out in my fur-hood-up parka to Jonathan Hirschman's latest MakeIt NYC Meetup. We convened at the new and nifty Impact Hub New York. This is a CoWorker by day that does events in the evening---on Broadway just south of Canal in Manh.
Jonathan and MakeIt NYC curated a great event with five Maker-centric presenters---including my old chum (and newest Health Maker Lab Advisory Council member) JF Brandon of BotFactory.
JF is Marketing Guru of BotFactory Inc. (I also consider Meister Brandon to be one of the geniuses of the early 3DP movement here in NYC.) BotFactory is the BK-born & bred (mothered by NYU-Poly) PCB---Printed Circuit Board, for you LifeSci folks---factory on your desktop. (Think "3D printing" your entire circuit---including traces, solder paste and pick-&-place of components---via their Squink product: YOWZA!)
Almost every hardware device in existence now aspires to built-in intelligence, robotic inclinations and IoT (Internet of Things) "cloudy" connectivity. Most of those attributes reside on a circuit board. So, the flexibility, speed, iterative-ness and security of rolling your own component-laden PCB is a major advantage in such overweening challenges as Time To Market...

Since you're known by the company you keep, please let me update you on our Health Maker Lab Advisory Council.

Here is our current (and growing!) official Advisory Council list (in alphabetical order):

John Coghlan, Founder/Principal, DUMBO Startup Lab;
Matt Lipschutz, former Meetup Board Member, Hack Manhattan. Co-Founder, new transport-admissions system startup;

Good Morning, Synergist!
From my "sneak peek" email to you and our Community of last night, you know that we're now (1) convening our February Meetup on Wednesday, the 17th; (2) enjoying the Venue-Sponsorship of BRAND-NEW WeWork Dumbo Heights; and (3) prepping to present our Health Maker Lab (HML) latest-report to you.
This HCx3DP Meetup agenda will include the roll-out of our totally novel---and highly compelling!---Lab "floor plan." With our HML plan, we're pitching a VERY Big Tent. For some very good reasons. And, I'll explain why on 17 February...
I'm confident you'll find we're designing an environment and ecosystem that will foster Bio-Making, Health-Solving and Life-Enhancing at the Community level---however you "size" YOUR Community of interest.
First and foremost, Health Maker Lab will help grow rich and fecund creativity---YOURS!
Synergists, Bio is the new Black...and it's also the new Gold. So---as a Not-for-Profit---your HML is driving to empower your Citizen Science. In the surety that our Common-Good support will buttress your business building and/or social commerce. For the betterment of all...

Dear Synergist!
Tomorrow evening---Tuesday, 26 January, at 6:30 PM---we roll out our red carpet and invite you in to plan, progress and “play” with us to continue advancing Health Maker Lab (HML). (CityScience is venue-hosting us at their offices at 68 Jay Street, Suite #403, DUMBO.)
Tomorrow night---AND in this email---we’ll also explain how you can become a LabFan. Your use of HML's LabFan Donor-Starter Promo Kit will benefit your own organization while benefiting HML.
HML’s LabFan is a compelling means for your organization to get to know---and be known by!---Health Maker Lab’s important and growing Community of Health players. Ours is a broad, nonprofit, Health-enhancing mission and we proffer a Big Tent “welcome” of Healthcare diversity.
HML’s unique marketplace-positioning presents LabFan-program participants with targeted and effective means to access our segments’ decision-makers. While, at the same time, enhancing the well-being of many NYC local and City-wide communities. Further---via LabFan---your organization will learn from, and collaborate with, us for mutual betterment going forward.
Plus---as a Founding LabFan---you’ll have “first-refusal” opportunities for taking precedent-advantage of future HML promotions.
Our LabFan program is low-cost and low-risk---while delivering high rewards to your company or group. That includes superior ROI to buttress your "early supporter" status. We've created LabFan to advance your organization’s interest in accessing our present and prospective HML Community. All while creating goodwill for you and show-casing your positive profile.
So, come join-in with us tomorrow evening in person for our proven mix of Health Maker Lab news, ideas, discussion and exchange around our common interests. (RSVP on this page and kindly donate a nominal admission fee.) We’ll talk more about LabFan at Tuesday night’s event. But---if you’d like more right now---please read on below.

HML's LabFan Donor-Starter Promo Kit.
Please let me outline how LabFan would work---for both our organizations---via our latest introductory Outline here.
Become a "LabFan" Leader: Gain from Founding-LabFan participation in support of HML development via PR, promotion and positioning within our innovative Program:
(A.) Get involved and inspired (see specifics below): garner business gains (hard and soft) from our HML community's social commerce and common-good advancement.
(B.) Help grow our HML Community (for your benefit and ours): make attendance at our events free for HML participants via donations by your LabFan Leader organization.
(C.) Build interest, base and clout for both our innovative HML Program AND your LabFan organization.
(D.) Micro support delivers Macro fostering: Join us---early and cost-effectively---at $500 per month for three months of trial LabFan status. (Want even more compelling terms? Invest three months up front for $1,275---instead of $1,500 over three months.)
(E.) After three months, decide whether a deeper relationship with HML is important to your organization's goals. Then---if we've build goodwill with you---consider moving up to an appropriate "Founding" Donor level.

…AND, Greetings---Synergist---from the Blizzard of 2016 here in Tech-Centric Brooklyn!
[I’m writing to you from my home office --- in our DUMBO loft apartment overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge and Downtown Manhattan. The weather conditions ARE fulfilling the meteorological definition of “blizzard.” Semi “white-out” visibility through the high-wind driven horizontally blowing snow. Our accumulation is forecast to be ~2 inches per hour for much of the rest of the day. I can hear the muffled scrapping of plow-blades on BQE and Bridge roadways below about every 7 or 8 minutes. Who knows what the total snow-fall will measure in our neighborhood… Still---like my local Grandsons---I’m eager to get out in it…at least for a time…!!]
Now, below is the Health Maker Lab (HML) update I promised you in our most-recent emailed HML news of 19 January.
Many of our new, official Advisory Council members will be participating at our Tuesday, 26 January, HCx3DP Meetup/Health Maker Lab Review & Workshop (#8).
Please come out and join-in with your enthusiasm and ideas at CitySci. We're planning to address---as a group---a number of issues and opportunities during this Meetup. (Please RSVP and donate on this Page.) We'd love you help!

HML News: A Review at the End & Beginning of 2015/16 [you may have already gotten updates about some of these doings...] ---
To encourage your continued interest to join-in our accelerating success --- which will also be yours! --- here's our latest HML News:
(A) City Science Venue-Hosts HCx3DP/HML Again (confirming our connection to important players) ---
On Tuesday, 26 January, CitySci will host our next "HCx3DP Meetup NY"/Health Maker Lab Report & Workshop. We'll be back at City Science here in DUMBO---for the third time! CitySci---a STEM-Ed NfP using the City as an education venue---is also one of our top STEM-Partners. Their continued pro bono support bodes well for our strengthening relationship.
(B) Our First Major Corporate Donor ---
3DPrinterOS---creator of a Cloud-based, Open, 3DP Operating System---has pledged $30K worth of 3D printers.
(C) A New Director Accepts a Seat ---
Aaron Roy, Director of Strategy & Operations at 3DPrinterOS, has now joined our Board.
(D) Another Talented and Enthusiastic Volunteer ---
Gianna Curcio---Mechanical Engineer, Digirati, 3DP Technician for the VA/Manhattan & a Digital Artist---joins our Videographer, Marcin Kulesza, to help out.
(E) Meeting, on 11 January, with NYU-Tandon at MetroTech Center, Downtown BK ---
I met with the NYU-Tandon's (new name of the NYU {née Polytechnic} School of Engineering) Vice Dean for Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Kurt Becker---and an old friend---on Monday, 11 January.
I had multiple goals for this meeting. And, a concluding slide-full of "asks!" But, my first objective was to interest NYU-Tandon in hosting our physical HML prototype space. In exchange for a novel, turnkey Lab replete with major players, mentors, trainers, lecturers and eTinkers---with strategic Healthcare disciplines, innovations, equipment and an accelerator---open to his Tandon community.
I think that a Higher Ed Institution (HEI) is a natural venue-partner for our HML prototype. If NYU-Tandon passes on this opportunity, we have---literally!---10 other HEIs in Downtown Brooklyn. Next in line would probably be CUNY NY Tech followed by LIU... (The Downtown BK Partnership has already created a working consortium of these 11 HEIs and their 60K (!!) students---another resource we WILL tap!)
In the meantime, Kurt and I are continuing our discussions around the specific common-interests we identified on 11 January. And, our HML "Asks!"
(F) This last week, I had another principal-to-principal Partner/Donor Meeting with a 3DP player AND a very rich experience with Genspace---one of their public "Entrepreneur Talks" and exchanges thereafter about mutual interests (I love this pioneering and innovative LifeSci organization!) ---
As these fertile matters develop, I'll be back to fill you in.

Fellow Synergist! Hope & Trust your end-of-year Celebratory Season was as grand as you could have wished...
Now, it's time to "meetup" again in 2016. LOTS going on! MUCH to talk about! PLENTY (as ever!) to learn from you! Our first event of the year---HCx3DP Meetup NY with Health Maker Lab Update & Workshop---is STILL scheduled for Tuesday, 26 January, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM here in DUMBO.
HOWEVER, WE HAVE CHANGED THE VENUE!!!
CityScience (http://cityscience.org/)---another one of our regular Venue Hosts---is now welcoming us all back to their offices in DUMBO (for the third time). CitySci's address is 68 Jay Street, Suite 403. Our event is at the SAME date and time as announced prior---and shown above in this post and on this Event Page.
CitySci is an innovative STEM-Ed NfP using the City as an education venue. Great folks, great ideas, great implementations.
Reason for this change?? I JUST heard from HUGE, Inc.---our prior planned Host for 26 January---that the makeover of their Meeting Spaces at 45 Main Street will not be completed on the schedule they had expected. So, HUGE has had to postpone their Venue Hosting for our Tuesday, 26 January. Alas. Still, we're planning with HUGE to meet again in their new digs in the next few months.
As promised, I'll update you about our latest Health Maker Lab advances---via this page and email direct to you---prior to our Meetup next week.
Looking forward to working with You in this New Year. Come next week to help us power our HML "rocket ride" as we accelerate our progress in 2016. Come be part of something important...for You, for all our Synergists and for members of the other communities we plan to enhance!
How? By empowering Citizen-Scientists---like You---to create healthier lifestyles, novel healthcare solutions and better patient outcomes at the local MakerRoots. (Say...THIS is part of Health Maker Lab's Mission Statement...!)

Okay, Would-Be Synergist! Yep, I'm addressing those of you---among our 200 members---who have yet to get personally involved since you "signed up" here with "HCx3DP Meetup NY."
This is still our official name...even though we've invested the last seven or eight months in a key, innovative subset of "HCx3DP..." That is "Health Maker Lab"---HML, for short.
Bear with me! In this update, I'm going to present additional (compelling!!) reasons for you to commit more of your time and attention to HML. I think in many cases, your free-will commitment likely comes down---in the main---to the appeal of our evolving strategies. And, how---despite this world full of so much choice---they complement your own interests .
Fair enough. Since some of you joined our Meetup Community, we HAVE changed our targets and readjusted our focus. Health Maker Lab is BOTH broader and narrower than HCx3DP.
Broader in that we've expanded "3DP" to Digital Fabrication---or, DigiFab. You know as well as I that tech of every kind is evolving at lightning speed. 3D Printing is an important subset of DigiFab---especially when applied to Healthcare solutions. BUT, there are effective ways and means beyond 3DP to deliver those novel and necessary answers. Especially if we're thinking "Big Tent."
Narrower in that we've drilling down to determine the most effective of our ultimate HML solutions. Those solutions that will best meet the needs of specific patient, client or recipient communities for improved health---in a larger compass of that phrase. From our HML Community to the larger local community by narrowing our "envisioning" to integrate appropriate solutions. Even if they are NOT the traditional modes of "modern" medicine.
Big Tent---
Now---as this post's title suggests---our HML operational strategy includes putting up a Big Tent and inviting disparate interests (yours!) to enter in expectation and join in our convocation successfully. At this point, we will be hard put to keep our internal HML Action Centers to eight or 10. And, to address the needs of "only" five or six external neighborhood partner or player populations.
Internally, diverse Action Centers will promote the cross-pollination of new and novel ideas. Leading to what we hope are effective hybrid solutions in Healthcare.
Externally, serving the varied needs of sometimes competing neighborhood interest groups and organizations ("Hood Hubs!") WILL add to the complexity of our interfaces, relationships and connections. Human interactions ARE usually "messy." (As Miss Frizzle of "The Magic School Bus" admonishes those who would produce scientific creativity: "Take chances; make mistakes; get messy.") We will have to inform our out-facing perspectives with common-good POVs commonly shared.
GeoPrint---
Our HML "action footprint" on the maps of our overlapping communities---our GeoPrint---are likely to be rather fluid. Especially to start. The interests of our HML Community, donors and partners and Healthcare recipients will ensure some curious GeoPrint "gerrymandering." At least until we can rationalize our efforts---from (eventually) adequate resources.
Our startup GeoPrint will (likely!) center in Brooklyn---the "Techreative" Borough. Our initial home-base will (likely!) reside in the Brooklyn Tech Triangle (BTT). That's DUMBO (the City's official "Digital District"), the Brooklyn Navy Yard (335 tech-driven startups and ramp-ups) and Downtown Brooklyn (14 higher ed institutions and 60K students). A rich stew of assets that will help us to launch successfully. (I've lived and worked in Brooklyn for over 35 years and I can vouch for its base of resources---in our pursuit of a new kind of Health.)
From the BTT, we'll (likely!) spread in Brownstone and Riparian (East River) BK and east into UltraUrban East New York and Brownsville. Neighborhoods of high health needs. NYC enjoys 55 major Healthcare facilities. The self-selected among these will act as our first Hood Hubs among equals. We are---after all---focused on Health and hospitals strive to deliver that uncommon commodity.
Donors and partners---action resources---may drive the expansion of our GeoPrint in unpredictable directions. It is possible that interested players in northern New Jersey could influence our development there---before, say, The Bronx or Staten Island. Certainly, the TriState Region is a natural GeoPrint extension for HML. After that...the world?!!
Viral Ecosystem---
Health Maker Lab is intent on prototyping its inspirations, ideas and innovations in an initial "sandbox" location. We'll play with the combinations that fascinate and foster the most promising solutions to diverse needs. The most certain possibilities are the certainty of the unexpected.
As an antidote to negative results, we will call on our Advisory Council (eventually 15 in number) of proven players. These advisors---the bases for our Action Centers---will keep us progressing appropriately to a stable ecosystem at our first HML location.
At that breakout point, we envision a kind of viral HML "reproduction" regimen will commence. Successful ways and means, models and modes and---most importantly---trained and experienced cadre will empower rapid growth (likely?) within New York City.

These expectations will indeed require good people to achieve. Thus, we need YOU to become an active Synergist for Health Maker Lab success. Get excited; get psyched; get into action!

HUZZAH!
Health Maker Lab is now a New York State Nonprofit corporation. Yowza!!!
+++
In transitioning into a Not-for-Profit (NfP), we'll be picking up our development tempo...and, therefore, our need for "in-kind," hands-on, volunteer support.
Want to join-in the innovation on our HealthMaker "groundfloor?!" Got WordPress chops? (We're building a new HML Web site.) QuickBooks skills? (We need bookkeeping.) Media cred? (We're hot to tell the world---and all those potential donors out there---of the Healthcare solutions our Citizen Scientists will be creating...)
During our early going here, we're likely to need many different skill sets. If you're intent on helping, we're intent on having your good assistance. Reach out and tell us what you can---and/or want to---do...

Today, we received email notification of our new "NfP" status. (According to Albany, our "Exist Date" is 19 November 2015. But, it took the Department of State nearly two more weeks to let us know...hey, we're grateful it was that quick!)
I'd like to publicly thank our Brooklyn Law School (BLS) Legal-Intern Team---ably led by Dominika Wilk---for their professional, pro bono work on HML's behalf in this NfP incorporation effort. These graduate law students work for the Community Development Clinic of BLS' CUBE (Center for Urban Business Entrepreneurship) under the Directorship of Professor David Reiss.
Our next steps in this NfP process include infrastructure-building efforts---like By-Law customization and constitution of a Board of Directors and our "Advisory Council." This latter will be an official structuring of our current informal advisory team.
Further steps will include pursuit of our status as a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit via an application to the IRS. (This is the coveted class that enables donors to HML to take tax advantage of their donations.) Where NYState process took weeks, the IRS is likely to take months.
Fortunately, my Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez is the Ranking Democratic Member of the Small Business Committee of the House of Representatives. I've recently participated in a roundtable on Federal "grantsmanship" organized by Ms. Velazquez. So, her local staff has already promised proactive "constituent services" in expediting our IRS NfP petition.
In the meantime, HML will nonetheless be able to legally accept NfP donations. Future IRS validation will enable retroactive donation-deductions by our givers.
Please come out to our 15 December Meetup (RSVP and contribute here) (https://www.meetup.com/HCx3DP-NY/events/226683275/). Come learn more---about what and when and where and how we're doing---in person. Come get excited!!

Dear Synergist!
In the run-up to our 15 December Meetup (https://www.meetup.com/HCx3DP-NY/events/226683275/?), I will continue to showcase our Health Maker Lab (HML) evolutions for your understanding and benefit.
To that end, here is our latest HML Mission Statement, Revision #4. (Certainly, with more Revs to come.) Let us have your input, please!
We submitted our Nonprofit application to New York State at the start of November. We expect to receive the State's approval this month.

Mission Statement (Revision #4):
Short Form
Health Maker Lab empowers New York City Citizen-Scientists to create healthier lifestyles, novel Healthcare solutions and better patient outcomes at their community MakerRoots---via effective, open-source tech and co-located, commingled and complementary bio/med/tech disciplines in co-tenanted LifeSciences focused, outfitted and supported Maker Spaces.
Long Form
Health Maker Lab (HML) empowers New York City Citizen-Scientists to create healthier lifestyles, novel Healthcare solutions and better patient outcomes at their community MakerRoots---via effective, open-source tech and co-located, commingled and complementary bio/med/tech disciplines in a co-tenanted LifeSciences focused, outfitted and supported Maker Spaces.
We will take a "Big Tent" approach to nurturing creativity by cross-breeding new development-models across and among Health-focused sectors. This includes the integration of HML-based Action Centers---a community of affiliations that support multi-discipline, multi-tenant, multi-service-provisioned Life Makers to interact successfully.
To begin fostering superior healthy life-styles and patient out-comes, we will establish our prototype HML in "Techreative" Brooklyn. To assure success and sustainability at our ultra-urban, neighborhood level, we will employ appropriate, open-source technology and new modes of Life Making. These latter include Health Making, Bio/Med Tech, LifeScience Entrepreneurship and Healthcare-Job Generation.
Our HML solution drivers will include:
(1) the Maker Movement ethos (DIY, DIT & DID {Do It at a Distance});
(2) positive, technology-driven disrupting and democratizing ("DisDem") today's and tomorrow's Healthcare;
(3) regular community convocations ("ComCon") of interests via physical affiliation and online connection; and
(4) new modes of tech education and enablement (e.g., hyper-search, tactile or project-based learning, just-in-time education and bespoke bootcamps).
HML seeks to assure effective integration with---and service to---its home neighborhood. To that end, we will closely collaborate with key community players and institutions---while remaining independent: physically, operationally and psychologically. These local, HML "anchor/partners" will include:
(A) healthcare facilities,
(B) economic development organizations,
(C) educational institutions,
(D) local government offices and
(E) faith-based congregations.
Going forward, Health Maker Lab will strive to build a network of interconnected Labs throughout the Five Boroughs---on the way to extending our Health Maker Lab community-system to the Tri-State Region.
