Many modern Web applications are moving to OAuth 2 and Bearer Tokens, but there are other schemes that can do even more for us. In this talk, we will explore two newer authentication schemes that provide some cool new features. JSON Web Tokens (JWTs) are a compact way of authenticating identity and extensible claims. Macaroons are a decentralized mechanism from Google Research that allows us to delegate credentials with caveats for even richer capabilities in our distributed systems.

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last several years, you have heard of Bitcoin and its decentralized ledger of trust, the blockchain. Ethereum is a new platform based on similar ideas upon which you can build your own smart contracts, cryptocurrencies and maybe even new societies! There is a lot of potential (and hype) in this space, but we’ll focus on a simple and practical example that combines Web application technologies with decentralized trust models.
