HTML5 Lightning Talks!!!

Details

You've been sitting in the HTML5 Denver meetings all year with a beer in your hand thinking, "Why don't they have a talk on [insert topic here]?" Well, here's your big chance! This month, we are opening up the meeting to you. You've got 10 minutes to talk about the subject of your choice - that cool project you're working on at night, that killer API you just discovered (or wrote!), you name it...

No really, you name it! Drop me a quick email (scott@thirstyhead.com) and carve out your 10 minutes of fame and fortune.

6:00 - 7:00: Lightning Talks

7:00 - 7:30: Food!

7:30 - 9:00: More Lightning Talks

Node.js -- James Baker

So yeah, you’re aware of Node.js how it can make a cool chat client or some awesome web app, but how do you build a basic website or application with it? How do you harness its ability for lightning-fast markup? In this lightning round, we’ll discuss Express.js, and how it can help you create a simple, MVC-style layout and then use Jade.js to plow through the view markup and logic without getting your brain all fuzzy on tons of callback functions.

Phantom.js -- Nathan Lipke

Phantom is a headless browser based on WebKit. It's JavaScript API can be used to run load and interact with web pages. Your scripts can be written to output textual information or save an "screenshot" of the web page. PhantomJS can be used for informational services (Location, Find Pizza, Twitter status, ...) which can be included in shell scripts. Additionally PhantomJS can be used with Jasmine for Testing your web pages.

LocalStorage -- Nathan Olson

Handlebars.js -- Scott Davis

Raise your hand - how many times have you built up HTML in your JavaScript using String concatenation? Ugh... This + that + this + that + there has to be a better way, right? Handlebars.js is a lightweight templating library that allows you to write your HTML fragments and inject the values dynamically.

Navigate the Mobile Web Minefield -- Jeff Bail

This talk is a rundown of things I've learned shipping mobile web features used by millions of people around the world for MapMyFitness.

How to develop a jQuery plugin with CoffeeScript -- Wil Moore

Let's look at two "seemingly" complex topics that are actually quite simple and fun once you get the hang of them.

(1) Writing jQuery plugins

(2) Doing something useful with CoffeeScript

It doesn't take a lot of time; in 10 minutes, you'll have written (assuming you are following along) just enough CoffeeScript to emit a simple yet useful jQuery plugin.

Node.js + Cloud9 -- John Krueger

Titanium -- Vui Nguyen

PhoneGap and PhoneGap:Build -- David Becker and Paul Kohlhoff

PhoneGap is a unifying cross-device mobile framework It allows apps written using standard web code to have full access to native devices. The framework allows developers to maintain a single codebase for Android, iOS, Blackberry, and other common mobile platforms. PhoneGap is supplemented by PhoneGap:Build, a cloud-based service that builds PhoneGap apps for the supported platforms, removing the need to install any SDKs.

The presentation will contain an overview of PhoneGap and PhoneGap:Build, a discussion of features, and a quick walkthrough demonstration.
