Develop Cloud-Aware App for Non-Profit
Hosted by Datathons Bay Area by Data Science Salon
Details
The Open Data Center Alliance, a non-profit global organization with the mission of accelerating cloud computing adoption, is holding its marquee conference, Forecast 2014, September 22-24 in San Francisco, where it will host its first ever Hackathon. The Hackathon, a special session that is hosted by HP, will bring together teams of developers from companies like Disney and Intel to compete against each other and create a new application. As a developer, you are cordially invited to join us at Forecast and help create this new application. What application will the Hackathon create and why is it so important? The app, which we are calling VolunteerMax, will help non-profit organizations bring volunteers together to accomplish its goals. VolunteerMax will aim to make volunteer recruitment easy so non-profit organizations can get busy doing what matters most – help people work together for a better tomorrow.
What you need:
We are looking for developers able to code in a popular programming language/framework supported by HP Helion Cloud application Platform as a Service (PaaS). All levels of programming expertise are welcome. If you are creative, enthusiastic and motivated to help a non-profit cause, this is the place for you!
The Hackathon will consist of 8 teams with up to 6 members. You may register as an individual or bring an entire team. If you register as an individual, we will find a team for you. Time commitment:
Time commitment is quite minimal prior to the Hackathon itself. You will engage with our team in a kickoff meeting and we ask that you do not start coding prior to the event day. In order to prepare for the Hackathon, you are invited but not required to:
• Read the ODCA paper on Architecting Cloud-Aware Apps - http://www.opendatacenteralliance.org/docs/architecting_cloud_aware_applications.pdf
• Attend a 1-hour webinar to learn to use Helion PaaS
• Work on user stories, application design, and team approach
The Hackathon itself will be held on two consecutive days at Forecast in two four-hour blocks. Hackaton attendees will receive complimantary passes to Forecast and will be welcome to attend the event’s sessions, panels, and receptions. Yes! There is a prize...
The winning application will be judged based on cloud-aware characteristics, implementation of the design patterns that are described in the ODCA paper, successful deployment in the HP Helion PaaS cloud, and by following the input of the non-profit organizations invited to participate. Besides a public announcement at the Forecast Award Ceremony and a prominent showcase on the ODCA’s website and across social media channels, the winning team will also receive a special prize as a reward for their participation. However, the real reward will be given to all non-profit organizations that will be able to benefit from this cloud-based application and better match their volunteer workforce to its programs and causes.
