Re: [Hacks-Hackers-Austin] Idea for future meeting or ...?

From: Karen K.

My intro to this Hack-Hacker-Austin group came at the last meeting at ACC, thanks to JonL. Tonight I opted instead of coming to the Hack-Hacker-Austin Meetup to attend a meeting of VoteRescue.org to watch a program about how German hackers proved that electronic voting machines were untrustworthy and caused a voter revolution in Europe. (See below). I asked one of the organizers, Karen Renick, if she would like an intro to the Hacks-Hackers-Austin group, thinking there might be a future joint meeting. She liked that idea but was more interested in introducing you hackers to the hackers in Germany, which whom she is in contact.

I'm not sure how to develop this, so I will just ask the organizers of the group (Cindy Royal? Jon Lebkowsky?) if you would like to contact Karen Renick directly? Of course, I'd love to hear what comes of the connection. It might change the way we vote in Texas and beyond.

HI VoteRescuers!

Let' s Meet at SCHOLZ'S BEER GARDEN TUESDAY,
October 26th, 6:30, for Dan Rather  HD Net Special:  "Das Vote"!

GREAT NEWS!  Scholz's Beer Garden has HD Net TV and agreed to let VoteRescuers come watch the sure-to-be-great premiere tomorrow night of Dan Rather's new HD-Net Documentary, "Das Vote", which airs from 7 - 8 p.m. Central time.  (If you can't make it, but have access to an HD TV, it will air on channel 306.)

Scholz's is located at 1607 San Jacinto, Austin, TX , 78701.  Arrive a little early and order some food and drinks!  Let's make a party out of it!

"Das Vote", Rather's second foray into the topic near and dear to our hearts, is described as follows:  "As Americans prepare to vote - many of them by electronic machines - millions of Europeans are going back to paper and pencil. Germany is just one of three European countries to buy electronic voting machines, only to throw them out after hackers demonstrate their vulnerabilities. Also, one American's fight against voting machines in his state."   WOW!!!

EXCITING NEWS!  VoteRescue, Through Illinois Ballot Integrity Project,  SPONSORS TEXAS ELECTION INCIDENT HOTLINE!

The Illinois Ballot Integrity Project (IBIP), a "sister" group that has worked on election integrity issues for years in the same way VoteRescue has, has asked VoteRescue  to sponsor a Texas  "ELECTION INCIDENT HOTSHEET LINK" for reporting election irregularities in our state during Early Voting AND on Election Day, November 2nd!  This will be our 2nd time to have such a hotline link, thanks to IBIP!

An Election Incident Hotsheet is an Internet "bullhorn." It's a central outlet where citizens can directly alert fellow citizens to problems occurring at the polls.

We thank Roy Lipscomb and The Illinois Ballot Integrity Project (IBIP) for helping us set this up!  The IBIP has successfully operated their own Hotsheet in the Chicago area for the past seven elections.  You can review their Hotsheet at http://hotsheet.ballot-integrity.org/  (While you're there, check out the "Prior Elections" menu on the right.)  This has been a means to help realize their vision:  Elections that are accurate, transparent, and unquestionably fair.  (Sounds familiar, right?)

To visit the IBIP TEXAS link, sponsored by VoteRescue - http://www.voterescue.org/   The Election Hotline link is:  http://tinyurl.com/TX-Hotsheet

It's simple for visitors.

    - To submit a report, the visitor clicks on *Post*,  enters the report, then clicks *Post Comment*.

    - To read the reports, the visitor clicks on *Read...*

    - Anonymous reports are welcome.

Please tell anyone you know who has a problem voting with the machines, or experiences any other election irregularities in Texas, to click on the above link and report the details.

In Massachusetts, IBIP's Election Incidents Hotsheet link is sponsored by the Center for Hand-Counted Paper Ballots: http://www.handcountedpaperballots.org/

Election Hotline Link is:  http://tinyurl.com/MA-Hotsheet

In Illinois, click on IL Elections Incident Hotsheet below, sponsored by the Ilinois Ballot Integrity Project:  http://www.ballot-integrity.org/

Election Hotline link is:  http://tinyurl.com/IL-Hotsheet

THANK YOU, Roy Lipscomb, and The Illinois Ballot Integrity Project!

Remember, as a community, we count!

Regarding tonight's Hacks/Hackers ATX meeting, I have been asked to provide a link to some of the online interactives on the NY Times site. There isn't a dedicated place for these projects, but if you go to the Multimedia page at nytimes.com, you can browse some interactive features. http://www.nytimes.com/pages/multimedia/index.html.

We'll get things going tonight at 5:30pm with pizza and drinks, then Jacqui will begin her talk at 6pm. 823 Congress Ave, 2nd floor. Offices of Texas Tribune.

Hope to see you tonight.
Cindy
