Hacks/Hackers is back! For this very special edition we return with a stellar line-up of speakers and entertainment focusing on 'rebooting journalism'.

journalism + technology = #hhber

Stop by to see engaging presentations and workshops on...

  • Citizen Desk (community breaking news platform from Mozambique, ANIC winner!) with Adam Thomas
  • Faktomat (Die Zeit's new fact-checking platform) from Martin Kotynek and Joerg Burger
  • Adhocracy from NGO Liquid Democracy e.V
  • Mozilla OpenNews Fellowship from Annabel Church
  • School of Data by OKFN's Lucy Chambers

In addition to all that wholesome news innovation goodness, we'll also be serving beer and brezel. This is optional, just pay your €3 on the door (but try to let us know in advance).

Hope to see you there!

Best wishes, Adam

    Howdy all, as promised - the links to the tools we demoed last night: * http://finereader.abbyy.com/ (unfortunately - not free, but definitely worth it if you have to do this a lot!)
    * http://www.cometdocs.com/ (cloud based)
    * http://tabula.nerdpower.org/ (you'll need to set this up on a server yourself, but once it's running - really easy to use!)
    * http://pdf2htmlex.blogspot.de/ (command-line based) Post extraction (nerd alert - these need you to use the command line!) * https://csvkit.readthedocs.org/en/latest/scripts/csvstack.html - for stitching together CSV files. Hope it was useful! School of Data also has a full course on extracting data from PDFs explaining some of the things which affect your decision to do one thing or the other and we're working to improve it, so would welcome feedback! http://schoolofdata.org/handbook/courses/extracting-data-from-pdf/ (You can reach us on [masked]) Thanks for hosting #hhber !
