Hacks/Hackers #29 - DDJ Beyond Graphs, Digital security, Mobile news apps

Details

Dear Hacks & Hackers crowd,

We have come through at December full of Christmas Markets and Glühwein, and the fireworks of New Year celebrations, with the hope of digging into 2016 with enthusiasm. And on that note we invite you to join our first meetup of the new year as we discuss the intersection between Technology and Journalism.

On our trip to Chaos Communication Congress and beyond we met some lovely speakers, come along and meet them!

Tom Steinberg (@steiny (https://twitter.com/steiny)) founder of m (https://twitter.com/mysociety)ySociety. Computer assisted journalism shouldn't be about pretty graphs. News media companies are increasingly setting up data journalism teams that are primarily focused on new forms of presenting stories. In his talk Tom (who is a pioneer in the UK civic technology space) will argue that this is distracting journalistic technologists from the bigger wins that are available.

Matthew Mitchell (@geminiimatt (https://twitter.com/geminiimatt)) is a digital security researcher & operational security trainer from New York City. He organzies a monthly talk on security in Harlem called crytptoharlem. Before that he was a data journalist at the New York Times and a developer at CNN & AOL/Huffington Post. This talk will discuss practical and easy steps to increase your digital and operational security. We will discuss how this protects your research, your sources, and your future.

Christopher Guess (@cguess (https://twitter.com/cguess)) is a Knight International Journalism Fellow, photojournalist, developer, disaster specialist. Push is a new platform for news orgs that think they don't have the time, talent or money for their own mobile app. Push is a collection of open source native Android and iOS mobile apps along with plugins for many popular CMSs used by news organizations world wide. Instead of six months and a massive budget Push lets news organizations publish their own app in weeks. Christopher will talk about the impetus behind this project and how your news organization can use and contribute to the project.

As always, if you can help us find speakers, hosts or have a burning desire for a specific topic to be covered please contact us.

Kind regards,
Hacks/Hackers organising team.
