There will be two short talks on apps, both based on the Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/).
One is Guardian Anywhere (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.futureplatforms.android.guardian), an unofficial app for Android, which Tom Hume (http://twitter.com/#%21/twhume) and James Hugman (http://twitter.com/#%21/jhugman) from Future Platforms (http://www.futureplatforms.com/) will be telling us about.
The second is an HTML5 web-app built with a focus on mobile devices. This yet-to-be-released app is powered by the Guardian API and designer/developer Robert Douglas (http://twitter.com/#%21/anucreative) from Ribot (http://ribot.co.uk/) will be telling us how he's done it.
We're also going to be looking at mapping. Community coordinator at the Guardian Laura Oliver (http://twitter.com/#%21/LauraOliver/) will be telling us about how Crowdmap was used during the clean up after the riots.
Crowdmap was built by non-profit tech company Ushahidi (http://www.ushahidi.com/). Erik Hersman (http://twitter.com/#!/whiteafrican), one of its founders, is just off a plane from Kenya and so becomes the only non-Brightonian to talk at this meetup. He will give some more examples of how the Ushahidi platform has been used.
Andy Hume (http://twitter.com/#%21/andyhume) from ClearLeft (http://clearleft.com/), who worked for Multimap until it was acquired by Microsoft and who then became development lead for Bing Maps UK, will be talking about mapping and guiding us in something a little more hands on.
The event will be followed by networking drinks upstairs at the Fitzherberts (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/place?um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=brighton+fitzherberts&fb=1&gl=uk&hq=fitzherberts&hnear=0x48758509f6294167:0x9cc6af7a727d0ef9,Brighton,+Brighton+and+Hove&cid=10442146953932335736).
Part of Brighton Digital Festival: a month-long celebration of digital culture, 1 - 30 September 2011.
