More on the speakers: Lydia Byrne
Lydia Byrne is heading into the final year of her PhD in the area of visualisation. She is looking at the different factors which should be considered during the visualisation design process, including relevance to audience’s interest, salience of key visual features and ease of interpretation. Her interest in visualisation first emerged during her work at the Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation in Canberra, when she realised that it provided a way to combine her two loves from university: Maths and English literature.
The presentation will focus on the role of ‘figurative visualisation’ (e.g. illustrations, photographs, maps) in conveying new information to the audience, compared to more traditional visualisations. I’ll provide an overview of some interesting results from new studies, unpack some common misconceptions, and deconstruct a range of examples, including some abc online stories.
Semi-pro!
If you like a good micro-brew to go with your hack/hacking then you're in luck. The March event will feature beer from Semi-Pro Brewing (https://www.facebook.com/semiprobrewing).
