Did you know that South Africa's first successful prosecution for online piracy took place this year (http://www.htxt.co.za/2014/04/17/sas-first-digital-pirate-receives-five-year-suspended-sentence/)? That means that distant-sounding international issues like the ethics surrounding school children being fined for sharing songs online (http://www.foxnews.com/story/2003/09/09/12-year-old-sued-for-music-downloading/) or police conducting dawn raids on hard drives and imprisoning people for downloading films (http://www.zdnet.com/seven-people-jailed-in-chinas-first-online-copyright-lawsuit-7000029537/) are suddenly very locally relevant.

Now is the time for South Africans to understand what copyright is, how it should be fairly enforced and what the best alternatives are.

We'll be screening The Pirate Bay: AFK (http://watch.tpbafk.tv/) on 21st June at JoziHub in 44 Stanley, Johannesburg. Hacks/Hackers will be hosting Kelsey Weins of Creative Commons, along with experts and activsits from WikiMedia and more. Come along and meet those with an interest in how Creative Commons works and how we can ensure South Africa doesn't make the same mistakes as other countries when it comes to policing its citizens online.
