Speakers
This month's Hacks/Hackers London is taking an international turn as we have two amazing speakers who will be over from the US:
• Miranda Mulligan, Knight Lab, Evening Edition and former digital design director at the Boston Globe
• Jacqui Maher, assistant editor of interactive news at the New York Times
They are in town for MozFest (the Mozilla Festival) so we thought we would arrange a Hacks/Hackers round them.
And we have another new venue. This month our friends at Wayra, Telefónica's global startup accelerator, are hosting us.
Miranda Mulligan, executive editor, Knight Lab @jmm
In addition to her role at the Knight Lab, Northwestern University's team of technologists, journalists, designers and educators working to advance news media innovation through exploration and experimentation, Miranda is editor-in-chief of Evening Edition.
She will be talking about both the work of the Knight Lab and the simple formula of Evening Edition, which provides a daily email of five stories at 5pm. (More on that here.)
Jacqui Maher, assistant editor of interactive news, New York Times, @jacqui
Jacqui Maher started in November 2009. She has worked as a programmer on sites like Friendster, Hearst Interactive Studios, Live Nation, and the web and mobile division of EastMedia Group in New York.
She will be talking through some of the interactives she's worked on at the New York Times.
#Mozfest Specials
There are too many good people in London and too many interesting projects coming out of Mozfest so tonight we'll start with a special slot that will include three short 2-minute pitches:
Joanna Geary, Hacks/Hackers buddy scheme trial
Mohammed Haddad, data viz, Al Jazeera English (based in Qatar)
David Eads, news apps, Chicago Tribune
Lightning round
Jeremy Walker, Newsfixed @Jwalkerpress
Matt Hill, Spark London on podcasting
Drinks
We are delighted to say that we have a drinks sponsor for the evening. Tableau has generously offered to buy the beers.

There are always problems entering this venue (Wayra Academy). Somebody upstairs should keep an eye out on people buzzing at the door downstairs.

Hello - sorry, for those of us who think that it sounds like a really great event, but who can't unfortunately make it, might anyone be videoing the event, and might a video be available?

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.

joanna: buddies.hhldn.co.uk as meaningful hacks hackers support n cross-pollination
miranda: evening edition was actually external innovation from outside the sector, simplified news with just 5 links
high percentage 85% open/read rate on dominant 30k+ email subscriptions, experimenting with local versions such as cairo and tugboat - timeline js (end user tool hopefully by year end), soundcite js, storymap js (only launched last week!) and twxplorer
lightning talks: tarbell.tribapp.com supports simple static websites via google spreadsheets; if in chicago, open data on saturday nights + welcome
@martinbelam: mysteriousprojecty.tumblr.com
@jacqui: focus on automated tech such as server scripts, now integrated into ruby on rails
best regards
