We are being hosted by our friends at Wayra, Telefónica's global startup accelerator: @Wayra
Speakers
Al Brown, head of video, VICE UK @_AlBrown
VICE may have started life as a Montreal fanzine, but it has developed into an international media brand.
In addition to publishing a magazine, VICE is now a major player in video journalism, with documentaries such as This Is What Winning Looks Like, about the troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, and films from Inside North Korea.
VICE News launched in December, with journalists now sending dispatches from around the world, including from Ukraine, Syria and Turkey.
Peter Jukes, live tweeting the phone hacking trial, @peterjukes
Peter Jukes found himself in a bind: he had access to live tweet from the trial of News of the World editors and others accused of phone-hacking; but no media organisation to pay for his time.
So he launched a crowdfunding campaign, and raised the money from an audience who wanted to read his tweets.
Several months and thousands of tweets later, he's still going strong.
Lightning round - Three-minute bursts of insight from...
• Anthony Sheehan, Near You Now.
• Gen Ashley, Open Tech School
Drinks
The beers are being provided by Shorthand, an application for making immersive stories. We heard from them at February's event and they have kindly agreed to buy the booze at this meetup.
As always, all are welcome at Hacks/Hackers, a global meetup of journalists and technologists. The only thing we ask is that you sign up to let us know you are coming.

A surprise highlight of the evening was Anthony Sheehan's brief pitch. NearYouNow appears to be attempting to solve the perennial problem of hyperlocal, data-driven news sites: personalisation according to geographic relevance. Would have loved to have learned a lot more about that. I'll be watching what they do with interest.

I know this has nothing to do with the organisers but it would be helpful in future if people know they're not going to make it to change their RSVP earlier in the day. I put my name on the waitlist just before lunch and got allocated a ticket 10 mins before the event. It's a bit annoying because I really wanted to go, an now there's an empty seat. Had I known at lunchtime I would be there now!
March 26, 2014
I only got my place just before the event started and couldn't get there in time. Looks like it was an interesting evening. Hopefully see you all next time.

Thanks again to the organizers for accommodating OpenTechSchool London last night.
For those who want to find out more, go to http://www.meetup.com/opentechschool-london.
All are welcome as learners, but we're also particularly interested in looking for more Python coaches for the Free Beginner Python class on April 7 & 14 (both are Mondays and the class is from 6:30pm to 8pm at Skills Matter). Also looking for coaches for other languages for future classes, so get in touch.
I can be reached via email at [masked] and I'm on Twitter as @coderinheels.

Really enjoyed last night's talks by Peter Jukes and Al Brown of VICE UK, also well done to Gen A the Coder In Heels for launching an initiative like Open Tech School. I'll be posting photos and videos from last night as well as last month's HHLDN on www.hiyalife.com.

Really enjoyed it, was my first event, thanks so much for organising and to the great speakers.
March 26, 2014

thank you guys
March 26, 2014
I am unable to take up my wait list spot - unfortunately. I am sorry about this as it seems like a great event!
March 26, 2014
If anyone is dropping out last minute, could you please let me know as I have a friend who wants to go. Thanks.
March 26, 2014
Hi, have to cancel, my loss, have freed up a ticket for a lucky wait-lister.
March 26, 2014
Wanted to go, but only just got a slot this morning due to early oversubscription - in the mean time I've made other plans for tonight. Have opened up my slot!
March 26, 2014
Hi Cassie, My +1 is still coming- It's Eoghan Macguire. See you tomorrow!
March 25, 2014
Please don't remove my +1! My guest is deffo coming and if I knew there was a question mark over it I'd have got them to register too.
March 25, 2014
People with guests! If they're not coming, please remove them so others can come. Thanks!!
March 25, 2014
If we removed all the +1s and +2s, we'd clear half the waiting list. Maybe something for the next event?
March 25, 2014
The last event really surprised me, I'm sure this will out do last month's event..
March 25, 2014
Hi Suddaf, I removed the plus 1 function because there are already too many people, and sometimes we need everyone's name. This was a nightmare last time with guests! Ana, if you definitely want to bring someone and had a +1 before, send me an email and we'll work it out.

Nooo! I booked for myself + 2 and then tried to reduce it to +1 and it wouldn't do anything... And now I seem to have lost my +1 :-( Is there anything that can be done? Please?
March 24, 2014
We are looking to get advice on how to merge story telling, journalism and education to continue disrupting the way that corporates approach learning and preparing new talent. Can't wait to meet everyone.
March 24, 2014
I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.

Easily the dullest Hacks/hackers I’ve been to, and I’ve been to a few. Nothing there for hackers or people interested in data. Peter Jukes gave a polished performance, but was not equipped to answer even elementary questions about data. He made a brief, entirely empty mention of semantic analysis, which was tantalising. The audience was over-stuffed with hacks, possibly very few of whom make an independent living and were therefore much more interested in how he went about crowd-funding his activity. Not uninteresting, but not what Hacks/Hackers has been known for. No discussion of the wider context of opening up judicial data. Al Brown was just dull with nothing at all to say to hackers. The questions to him were even duller... What’s your favourite ever documentary? What’s your health and safety policy? What equipment do you use? What colour toothbrush do prefer?
