Hacks/Hackers January Meetup

* PLEASE NOTE, THE DAY OF THIS MEETUP HAS CHANGED *

The date for this meet up has changed. It was due to take place on Wednesday but is now happening on Thursday. Many apologies for any inconvenience caused.

What if I can't now attend?

Please take yourself off the list by changing your RSVP status. This will mean that someone on the waiting list will be able to attend in your place. They will be very grateful and so will we.

Oh no, I'm too far down the waiting list!

Never fear. We're continuing our experiment with a limited number of "queue-jumping" paid passes.

The idea – suggested by community members – lets you skip the waiting list and helps us raise some funds to expand the work of Hacks/Hackers London.

Buy your pass here:

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/hackshackers-january-meetup-tickets-15371429359

What's happening?

We have drinks! Our friends at Time etc are buying the beers this month.

For those of you who don't know, Time etc enables you to pay hand-picked assistants by the hour to do things like admin, blog writing, social media, organising or anything else you generally don't have time to do yourself.

Time etc are giving away free credit to spend on their platform to all attendees.  Just go to http://www.timeetc.com/hackshackers to register for free.

What about speakers?

1. Andrew Fogg, @andrewfogg,  import.io

2. Jamie Bartlett, @JamieJBartlett, Demos

SO GOOD TO MEET YOU ALL. I am pleased you liked my hat. When is the next one?

  • Thomas M.

Hope it was a great night. It was very frustrating I was only told I made the list at twenty six last night. Couldn't make it in time

    January 30

    • Peter M.

Hi Thomas. Yup, we realise it's not great and are implementing changes to prevent this happening again. Watch this space.

    1 · January 30

I am so excited about this event tonight. Is there a dress code? I would like to wear a large hat.

    4 · January 29

    • Joanna G.

Hats are most welcome, especially if they make a nod to the Hacks/Hackers theme. (Although we may request you choose a seat at the back of the room)

      1 · January 29

    • Phil C.

hats need to worn at a jaunty angle

      1 · January 29

  • Claire W.

I'm going to be late. It's snowing in Hampshire and I have literally just got to the station

    1 · January 29

  • Haffeera Cader S.

One more space available. Sorry I can't make it I was really looking forward to tonight.

    January 29

I'm just changing my RSVP to NO. I don't think I'll be able to get away in time. So, one more space up for grabs

    1 · January 29

  • Yee-Liu W.

Just changed my RSVP to NO - sorry unable to get there tonight.

    January 29

  • Charles B.

Hi, I'm an IT recruiter looking for developers. I see that the event is full but would there be a chance to meet some developers later who are looking for jobs in London?

    January 29

    • Dave N.

Hi Charles - I don't know what the policy is on using these comments to advertise/network, but you could just tell us what jobs you have to offer (ideally a link to the information online?) and then we can get in touch if we're interested.

      January 29

  • Sue L.

So sorry, something's come up and I just can't make it tonight. Such a shame, was looking forward to catching up with everyone. I've changed my RSVP to free up the ticket.
Have fun everyone! And if anyone's going to IJF in Perugia, see you there x

    January 29

  • Dave G.

Can't make it after all, RSVP status changed!

    January 29

  • Santosh N.

Hi ...can't attend, just changed my rsvp, so some lucky soul can go for it :) In case any of you are looking for an accountant for your limited company, please give me a shout.

    January 29

  • Andrea H

Unfortunately I can't make it tomorrow but my colleague Rebecca Rutt will be coming along in my place :)

    January 28

    • Dave N.

(at least 30 of the 200)

      January 29

    • Andrea H

Hi all, absolutely, this is the first time I've joined a meet-up and didn't realise that was the case. Thanks for letting me know. I'll do that right now.

      1 · January 29

  • Stefano P.

Unfortunately I cannot make this time. :(
    I freed up my place

    January 29

  • Sarah M.

If you are still on the wait list and want a 'queue-jumping' ticket, there's an option to pay £10. Here's the link (if the date says Weds then ignore that, it should be Thurs) https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/hackshackers-january-meetup-tickets-15371429359

    January 28

  • Thomas M.

How do I know if I'm on the list or not after some people cancelled?

    January 28

    • Sarah M.

Hi Thomas, I've checked and you are still on the wait list. You'll get an email if people drop out and a space becomes available. Alternatively, we do have some paid-for tickets (£10) if you want guaranteed entry. Here's the link https://www.eventbrite... (ignore the date, it is for tomorrow (Thurs). Will look to change that

      January 28

  • Chris F.

Unfortunately unable to make the revised date so freed up my spot.

    January 28

  • Markose

Sorry unfortunately can't make the changed day either. :(. I've freed up my spot.

    January 28

  • Zoe G.

    unable to attend :,(

if there are any Java developers out there looking for a job - please give me a shout, I have many up my sleeve x

    January 27

  • Paul

Can't make it neither, one more spot. Cheers!

    January 27

  • Calum F.

So, much like a lot of others, I can't make the new date. I've freed up a spot for one lucky winner.

    January 27

  • Catherine N.

I can't make it either - have changed my RSVP. See you next time!

    January 27

  • Claire W.

Silly question: how do you get notified if you're on the wait list if you are successful in getting a place that's become free?

    2 · January 22

    • Dave N.

You get an e-mail and it will show accordingly on the website and mobile apps.

      1 · January 27

  • Alastair R.

Can't make it with the date change either, have fun!

    January 26

    • Alastair R.

I think, but I'm guessing, that each place that's given up goes to the the next on the waiting list. That would make the most sense. Best bet is to keep your eyes peeled and get your name down early!

      1 · January 26

    • Joanna G.

Alastair is correct. The system reallocated based on the next person on the waiting list.

      1 · January 26

  • Matt A.

Can't make it now and just changed my RSVP, so there's at least one ticket spare...

    January 26

    • Matt A.

      Looks like it's gone, sorry!

      January 26

    • Peter M.

Spaces on the waiting list are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. In other words, new spaces that open up are given to the people at the top of the list.

      January 26

  • Ben H.

We arrange a data journalism hackathon end of February and will soon release all the details. Info will be posted on @datajshack. We likely only going to have space for a hundred ish people.

    Hi everyone,

We’re a young start-up looking for an IOS and a PHP/Front end developer. The product being built will change the way that employees in specialist industries learn and interact with one another. We already have a prototype in the app store and have quite a lot of work done on the back end.

If you’d like to learn more or just help out on the project drop me a message here or at: [masked]

    Thanks!
    Eoin

    January 23

  • Claire W.

Can I come along please? I have just signed up recently and would like to see what it's all about because I don't currently fit in anywhere. I do a mixture of writing using information design and info development. I am also having to review and rewrite journalists' work.

  • Steve M.

    Another space free on the
    wait list ...

    2 · January 20

  • Anushka S.

I am now travelling to the the States, so have updated my RSVP so someone on the wait list can take my place. I am completely honoured to have been asked by NASA to attend the SMAP (soil moisture active passive) mission launch at the end of Jan. Basically it is mapping the level of moisture in soil across the planet. So providing lot's of data for flood defence, agriculture tech and much much more. I will be covering the event via social media from the airforce base in Lompoc CA. Please follow me on twitter @nushkino if you are space science/environmental/weather prediction intrigued. I am so utterly honoured to have been asked! Here is the link to more info: http://1.usa.gov/174FMgq

I am in LA a few days before and after, if you have any cool recommendations for cool stuff to do, please let me know.

Have a great one all! Hopefully see you at the Feb meetup!

I'm hoping this will be a good event as usual. In the meantime I'm doing a bit of crowdfunding. If you're able to contribute it will be greatly appreciated (link below). If you can, please also feel free to share the link. Many thanks!

Hi, you all ! I'm facing a security problem at the moment. Maybe you can help. Some hacker is hacking my email accounts. How would you solve this problem ????
    Cheers.

I edit a mag/site on information security (hacking, cyber-espionage etc) and welcome news leads and expert comment.

    December 15

  • Abigail E.

I'm putting together a feature on journalism hackathons taking place in 2015 – does anyone have any to add to my list? It's an international list so not confined to the UK, and I'll be publishing it on Journalism.co.uk in the next day or two.
